Toyota Aygo X Review: Pint-Sized With Pumped-Up Style

The Toyota Aygo X is a tiny street fighter with a big attitude. This jacked-up city car packs a rugged exterior design with black body cladding, roof rails, and available contrast-color trim pieces to give it a brash look. But don't let the tough styling fool you – the Aygo X is still very much a compact urban runabout under that macho skin.

Pumped-Up Pint-Sized Powerplant
Powering the Aygo X is a pint-sized 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine producing just 72 horsepower. That might not seem like much, but in a car this small and light, it provides adequate motivation for city duties. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, or you can opt for a continuously variable transmission (CVT) if you'd rather not row your own gears.

The manual is definitely the way to go if you want to maximize the Aygo X's modest performance potential. With the CVT, the little three-pot sounds strained and wheezy when you give it the beans. But shift the stubby lever yourself, and there's a pleasant thrum as the tach needle swings toward the redline that reminds you this is a modern take on the classic city car formula.

Nimble Handling, Compact Dimensions
Where the Aygo X really shines is navigating tight city streets. The steering is light and direct, making it easy to thread the Toyota through traffic. Parking is also a breeze thanks to the car's compact dimensions and good outward visibility from the upright seating position.

The ride quality is perfectly acceptable for urban runabout duty. There's decent suspension travel to soak up potholes, but the Aygo X can get a bit bouncy over undulating pavement at highway speeds. Road and wind noise are also noticeable at higher velocities.
Clever Packaging With Some Compromises

Despite its tiny footprint, Toyota's designers managed to carve out a decent amount of interior space. There's enough room for four average-sized adults, though the rear quarters are understandably tight. Cargo capacity is also impressive at 231 liters with the rear seats up.

Material quality is a mixed bag – there are some nice design touches, but also an abundance of hard scratchy plastics. The infotainment system works well enough, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along for the ride.

Value With An Attitude
The Toyota Aygo X delivers a compelling mix of urban maneuverability, funky styling, and surprising practicality for its size – all at an affordable price point. It's an ideal city car for those who want to make a bold statement without breaking the bank.
Sure, there are some trade-offs in terms of performance, refinement, and outright utility. But with cheeky looks and just enough attitude, the pint-sized Aygo X brings some big fun to urbanites seeking affordable, space-efficient personal transportation with character to spare.
