This is a design for a proper drill that uses various size bits, that is portable and inexpensive, and that requires some bushcraft skills to make and use. I had a lot of fun coming up with this one and I hope that you all find it to be enjoyable and useful. Thanks for watching and please leave me a comment in the comment section below!

Hello, just found your channel and I must say after watching a few of your older videos, I was really impressed and got some super great ideas to lighten my load and make gear that I thought I would have to purchase. The best was the reflective cook oven for baking! I had never thought about this and wow it opened up a whole new area of camp cooking! I made one for about $3.00 U.S. following your instructions, but mine was just a bit bigger. It operates, folds, and stores away just like yours but instead of using a stick for the back prop, I cut and fashioned one from the scrap screen I cut to fit inside. I was impressed as to how well this oven works! Thanks so much for all the fantastic ideas! Please keep them coming and God Bless!

Nice idea. Put a wood spindle on the bottom and start a friction fire too.

Really neat idea! My dad used to use a pump drill he made on this same principle, using the chuck from a hand drill. He made bidirectional bits for it by pounding nails flat at the point and filing the edges sharp. Maybe that info will be useful for somebody.

Really like the keyless chuck idea, because it incorporates the flywheel in the chuck. Makes it easier to shift to another shaft if you want. Thanks for the video!

Thank you. I was looking for something to take a larger bit than a pen drill can and lighter and smaller than a bit and brace. Your idea and the pen drill complete my set! This is the kind of stuff I look for when rummaging the YT attic. I don't care for the smell of moth balls but it is worth it when I find little gems like this one. Thanks again!

Keyless chuck works better for your purposes than it does for holding steel bits in the drill. Nice tip

Cool idea. But it will ware down that bit pretty fast. Especially if you did metal. But love the idea. Maybe a spade bit would be better or simply raise up the spool when reversing on the bit to lessen the friction.

made my own bit and brace with pvc and one chuck.

I´d guess it would be a good idea to use drill bits for metal with this, as the bigger angle they are being ground with means more mass taking up the heat produced by the back stroke... Alternatively you could modify spade bits to look like the ones used with pump drills.

Btw, the two chucks might make a decent flywheel for rubbing two sticks together in a pinch.

Awesome idea. I'd use it to drill a hole in a flat bar and I'd make a makeshift pump drill. Can you use it with a wooden bit to make fire?

Could also use one of those old "egg beater" hand drills.
