A mother and father received the best gift this holiday season: Their baby boy got to hear their voices for the first time. His reaction when it happened: priceless. NBC New York’s Jamie Roth reports.

I am forever grateful for whoever invented the cochlea implant. I lost my hearing completely in 2001. Had the implant the following year. I am 74 now, implant has given my life back. I shudder to think what my life would have been liked without it.

My son’s hearing deficit was caught in one of those exams given at birth. At the moment, as a new parent, you feel absolutely lost. you don’t know what to do or expect. You are heartbroken for your son. Then the angels audiologists show up. I thank god everyday for them. Our son was fitted with hearing aids at 3 weeks of age. He is an adult now and has done nothing but great! A normal life, played competitive sports growing up, learned to play piano and gave recitals, and became a great scholar. So don’t dismay, they will be fine
