Today we are making Vegan Katsu Curry. Traditionally hailing from Japan, it is a sweet, tangy and lil spicy curry along with a cutlet of tofu which is simple to make at home and so delicious. Katsu curry is so easy to prepare at home and can be served with not just with tofu, but anything of your choice.
Katsu is one of Japan’s favorite western style foods. Katsu was invented in Japan in 1899 at a Tokyo restaurant called Rengatei. Katsu was more like a Japanese version of European cuisine. Katsu was initially prepared with Pork and later got adapted with seafood, chicken and even vegetables.
When it comes to the Katsu curry though, it came to Japan from India via British military officers, which is why Katsu curry doesn’t really resemble a traditional one and is considered to be a Western cuisine. This Western-style curry differs from the Indian-style curry, and got popular in Indian restaurants in Japan during the 1990s.

Ingredients for Vegan Katsu
Tofu - 500 Grams
All Purpose Flour - As Needed
Plant based Milk - As Needed
Cornflakes - As Needed
Oil - 1 Tablespoon

Ingredients for the Katsu Curry
Oil - 1 Tablespoon
Onion- 1 Medium
Carrots - 3 Medium
Ginger - 1 Inch
Garlic - 4 Cloves
Curry Powder - 1 Teaspoon
Garam Masala Powder -1 Teaspoon
All purpose Flour - 1 Tablespoon
Water - Approx. 200 ml
Coconut Cream or Coconut milk - 2 tablespoons
Salt - 1 and half teaspoons
Black Pepper Powder - 1 teaspoon
Sesame seeds for garnish

Made this last night for my family. It was delicious. We all loved it. Thank you for the recipe. The only part I struggled with was getting the cornflakes to stick to the tofu. Even with the flour and soy milk, the crushed corn flakes didn't want to stay on! Only a few flakes remained on them, but it was enough for me!

This looks great. I used to live in Japan, and I loved katsu curry. But I'm now vegan so thanks for this idea. I'd love to see if you could come up with a vegan version of Oyako-don. The chicken and egg cooked, over rice, cooked in a sauce of sugar and soy sauce with onions. You seem brilliant, so I encourage you.
