In this video, we’re going to talk about the reasons why you’re deficient in iodine. A lot of people think they may be deficient in iodine because they’re not eating enough seafood or because of poor growing soil. While this may be true, there are several other reasons for iodine deficiency.

Here are the 7 surprising potential causes of an iodine deficiency:
1. Selenium deficiency
2. Radiation
3. Goitrogen foods
4. Bromine/fluoride
5. Perchlorate
6. Oral contraceptives
7. Smoking

If you’re exposed to radiation, you’re exposed to iodine 131. Iodine 131 is radioactive and lodges into your thyroid receptors. You can take potassium iodide if you’re exposed to radiation or know you will be exposed to radiation. But, you would only take potassium iodide when you really need it.

Goitrogen foods are foods that deplete iodine and can cause a goiter. Goitrogen foods include:
• Cassava
• Soy
• Corn
• Canola
• Cruciferous vegetables
• Peanuts
• Pine nuts
• Millet
• Rice

Although cruciferous vegetables are goitrogenic, steaming or cooking them lessens the effects. Cassava can be especially problematic because it contains hydrocyanic acid and thiocyanate which bind to and block iodine.

Fruit and vegetables are low in iodine. Eggs are a good source of iodine, and meats and nuts are decent sources. The best sources of iodine are shellfish, fish, and sea kelp.

Chemicals like bromine, fluoride, and perchlorate are found in bread and drinking water, and all have the potential to block iodine. It's important to filter your water to avoid these chemicals.

The body does not store iodine and uses it up pretty quickly, so it is easy to become deficient.

I live in what is called "the goiter belt" in Southern Ontario. That is why our table salt is iodized. Going salt free can be a problem for some. I eat seafood, Brazil nuts for iodine but use pink Himalayan salt for cooking. I also take a kelp supplement.

Phosphate fertilizer has up to thirty percent floride in it. And floride accumulated in the leaf of vegetables. So grow your own.

What do you think about bladderwrack for iodine?

I did a 24 hour urine collection for iodine that showed a 65% saturation. Dr. Brownstein suggests aiming for 90%, in his book on iodine. Taking Lugol's has improved my energy and oddly enough, my ability to sweat more easily.

So good to know. I take with every meal 1/2 a nori sheet is seaweed and sold in stores as a snack item but when I go to oriental store I get the big package of plain nori sheets. When taken at end of meal clears the palette and quells tje taste buds so you dont feel like snacking. I'm diabetic so is very helpful. When young I was a potter and made miso soup for breakfast every morning because miso and seaweed chelate the body from heavy metals. I knew a monk from Ananda Marga that did disaster relief at Chernobyl and that is what they fed the vuctims

You wouldn't think 🤔 that iodine deficiency was still out there, but it definitly is! I had a patient with a full-blown, large goiter and TSH of 12- all due to iodine deficiency. 6 weeks later her TSH was 2 and the hoiter was gone! 🥳

Dr. Berg, can you take iodine supplements if you are on thyroid medication for low thyroid? I've never eaten fish. Never cared for it! Please address this important question!
