Yes! You do need uninsured motorist coverage, for two main reasons!
1) If the person that hit you runs away and you have no way of knowing their policy information, you need uninsured motorist coverage to protect you by reimbursing you for you medical bills and injuries.
2) If the person that hits you doesn't have enough coverage (most people have only minimum liability limits), you want your own insurance to have EXCESS and not REDUCED BY coverage, so that your insurance policy will reimburse you for the total amount of your medical bills and injuries. Uninsured coverage also serves the purpose of underinsured coverage (i.e. the other person's insurance is not enough).
