Im a nurse and worked in plastic surgery. We had a laser that we used for lipo to melt the fat and it could tighten the skin. I had to chip off about a quarter inch after every use.
You could etch on wood with it. Like a tongue depresser. Other laser used for hair removal and skin ablation can do the same thing

We have had this stuff for 30 years. Lockheed mounted a 500kw on a 747 back in the late 90’s. They realized the power and moved it all to more top secret programs. Hence why we are seeing it now

A teacher I had in college was ex military and told us many stories about laser weaponry he used. But, he never said Kilowatt. He always said Megawatt. 5 to 10 MW.
This was back in the late 70s just before Regan's Star Wars program.
