Northern Pike Faeces Contain Alarm Pheromone | Esox Lucius

Meet Esox Lucius, a Northern Pike known for their predatory dietary habit. A widely distributed species, native to Northern America and could be found from Iran on the east to Missouri in the west.

Did you know that Northern pike could leave their trail of faeces which contain alarm pheromones?

This pheromone would warn other fish species such as fathead minnow within the area to take off and increase their chances of survival.

By having this chemical signal in the pike's faeces, it could improve the survival rate of the receiver. Hence, pike will not deposit their faeces within their foraging area as a way to hide their identity as a predator.

The main consumer of this species is the angler, hence propagation of this species would be more commercially profitable towards angling clubs and sports fishing.

Farmers have been raising the fingerlings to stock water bodies and used for the commercial fishery.
