The Forgotten Arab Slave Trade of East Africa

The Arab slave trade in East Africa is one of the oldest, stretching back 700 years before the European transatlantic slave trade. Male slaves were frequently employed by their masters as servants, soldiers, or laborers, whilst female slaves, notably those from Africa, were long transported to the Middle Eastern countries and kingdoms as concubines and maids by Arab and Oriental dealers.

The Trans-Atlantic slave trade, which involved Western slave dealers, has received a lot of attention and discussion throughout the years. In contrast, the Arab slave trade has been largely overlooked, at times even viewed as a taboo subject. Despite being a crucial part of African history and having a catastrophic impact on the continent, its generations, and a people's way of life. However, both historians and experts have blurred the lines on this subject.

So, in this video, we shall expose the dark past and the forgotten Arab slave trade of East Africa. #HistoryVille #Slavery

I am an Afro-Arab historian and I am working on a very big project, that is focused on educating people on the Arab Slave Trade. Thank you brother for sharing this.

I'm glad you have brought this out. Many people are so focused on the transatlantic slave trade that they don't know about the Arab slave trade.

In fact, the Arab slave trade ended in the 1980s. And in many middle Eastern nations a lot of Africans are deceived to immigrate there and are enslaved there.

Thank you for providing this information. Europeans were also taken as slaves by pirates and Arabs. This is often ignored.

I am humbled as I watch this video. I have visited slave dungeons and memorials in Ghana, Benin, and Zanzibar. It grieves me that the African has been abused and used as merchandise by others for centuries. Only the grace and mercy of God can spare mankind of destroying himself and others.

At 10:14 the picture (a drawn copy of a photo) there is of recently freed slaves, they are sitting on the companionway from the main deck to the poop, of HMS Daphne, just in front of the signal flag locker. HMS Daphne was one of the ships in the East Africa squadron of the Royal Navy, sent to suppress the slave trade in the Indian ocean. it's the successor to the West Africa Squadron in the Atlantic, which first started around 1801. the last picture (12:50) is also taken on the deck of HMS Daphne.

This Arab appreciates your work! Thanks for sharing and as you mentioned it is quite difficult to find information on this subject.

Someone mentioned that some Arab countries still practice slavery and they're correct. It's a modern form of slavery called the Kafala system or Sponsorship system and it is a state sanctioned practice. It is absolutely disgusting and exploits migrant workers from India, Asia and Africa.

It's also very deceiving in it's application since companies present it as a private employment contract that is legal and resembles any normal job and gives the migrant worker legal working rights in the country.

Of course that isn't the case and there is zero to no regulation on the practice so you can imagine how migrants become exploited almost instantly with a few minor exceptions of employers actually understanding human and worker rights to support and supplement the migrant worker. However, that is extremely rare and there is no justification for the system in practice whatsoever.

We're finally seeing opposition from migrant worker unions, NGOs, and legal workers at least in my home country and we're finally seeing support for an end to the Kafala system but obviously the time was yesterday.

If any African brothers and sisters hear about an "Arab sponsorship programme" or "domestic work and visa" I would suggest you report them to an authority or NGO and get them charged for human trafficking!

Sending love to all my East African brothers and sisters ❤️

I’m from east Africa, and this taught to us at very young age . Because my great grandmother is a bloodline of the Egyptians she shared stories to me how the Arabs came to Egypt took over my people kingdom and enslaved them. That’s why most of them are in Egypt. They’re worse than the europeans.

It is amazing how much history is hidden in plain sight. For example; etymology of the word slave is directly from Slav… as in Slavic people…

You should include the Nubians as they made up a largest portion of the slaves as per John Alembillah Azumah and also the Baqt agreement which is also labeled the longest agreement in human history (700 years approximately)
I believe it outlined that the Nubians had to supply 360 slaves every year in exchange for peace
And this agreement had to be made because the Arabs were unable to defeat the Nubians in the battle of Dongola

But in USA do people talk about these facts? I heard that american campus are too politically correct and they never mention injustices committed by other cultures that are no christian.
That's wrong!

As it is stated in the Islamic Hadiths, Muhammad himself said 2 black slaves are worth as much as 1 white slave. So black slaves were cheaper. Think about that. Because everyone around the world continues to calls Islam the religion of peace, many believe Islam was created with equality, and many believes Muhammad was a black man himself. But the Hadiths states Muhammad was the whitest person in a crowd because the Hadiths describes how white Muhammad's body was. And most African women in the eastern slave trade became sex slaves.

There's a coastal town that's bordering Dar Es Salaam called Bagamoyo (bwaga moyo which means rest your heart in Swahili) because slaves from inner Tanganyika (now Tanzania 🇹🇿) would rest there after a long journey waiting for boats to Zanzibar where they would be sold off to Arabs
