Many people have mentioned how this is also used to devtest MP networking, but it’s also how some extremely modded versions of games have multiplayer that’s disconnected from the main game so that players don’t get banned from the actual game

There’s an Outer Wilds Multiplayer mod called Quantum Space Buddies that also runs Space War (it might be the mod manager running it I’m not sure) but it goes to show that not all the Space War “users” are pirates

Spacewar is also the app ID used to test a game in development for multiplayer purposes. So everyone playing that isn't only pirating. They could be testing their in development game.

If you want to play Dark Souls 1 online now that the servers are shut down, you have to use the DSCM tool. Part of that also requires you to change the ID to 480. I love it when people ask me what I'm doing; I just tell them I'm "playing space wars." The pop-up on Steam saying I am playing space wars usually gets followed by "What the heck is space wars?

One time I made a game in Unity and added the Steam integration package. Then, every time I opened the project in Unity, my Steam account would show I was playing Spacewar. Weird stuff!

Fun Fact: Space war is one of the first; if not the first video games ever made. It’s basically a proto astro party

Its not specifically a pirate, because to test with steams systems for your game you can utilize Space War.

I love my Spacewar, a game so complete, one day I can play a fighting game, In Another day it can be RPG, feels like a thousand game in one
