We're all waiting for the native docker apps support :)

A few weeks ago I had a complete failure of my truecharts, after I figured out what was going on and where scale was headed, I set up a docker jail and migrated all my apps to docker. It took me a lot of troubleshooting hours to get to that point, but it was worth it up to this point. Hopefully migrating back to native docker containers isn’t too painful when that comes down.

Whelp, you sold me. Just updated from 23.10.2 to latest. I'm definitely one of those longer holdouts.

Every experience I've had with the TrueCharts team has been highly unprofessional. I'm not surprised they threw a fit and rage-quitted their own project.

Thanks for distilling the (honestly ridiculous) drama from TrueCharts into such a short and informative video. I do think TrueNAS as a project and its community of users will be better served in the long term by no longer having any ties to such a toxic, poorly managed project, even if the short term learning curve during the transition will be steep.

Scale should have went with docker in the very beginning. Glad to see this change finally.

I'll say this about TrueCharts - There were some good apples in a barrel of rotton apples. I'm still a beginner when it comes to this, and while most of my interactions with the people on the server were unpleasant, there were actually a handful of people who were really nice and patient with beginners like me. And to give credit where credit is due (speaking purely as a beginner), setting up the TrueCharts version of apps to work was much more straightforward language-wise. Can't speak for the under the hood stuff going on about storage, but at least I can say that's why I gravitated towards TC first.

... not surprised...
the support guys on the Discord channel was "touchie" to put it one way...
I am however impacted by this as I have a couple of things using their tech...
one of which was the mapping of a external ip onto a specific app hosted. instead of everything just sitting on different ports on the NAS ip.
cant say i feel bad... but it's like damm... the work to unravel the TC services now, hopefully there are TrueNAS community replacement versions.
one of the big one's... moving from TC Plex to TrueNAS Plex, and not having to redo the entire Plex profiles and watched lists etc.

The issue was lack of app support and updates with native truenas scale. Never had much of an issue with trucharts but will most likely abandon both truenas scale and truecharts. HexOS will be interesting to follow

TrueCharts' Discord staff has also always been passive aggressive, quick to ban and generally not at all nice. Honestly excited to switch away from them.

I tried TrueCharts and it didn't live up to my expectations. So I used the virtualization in TrueNAS to spin up a Linux server to which I run Docker. Interested how the interface will be in TrueNAS for Docker. Right now I just manage my through VS Code/SSH/Docker Plugin. Pretty happy with it as is.

Truecharts went where i expected truecharts to go.

I am using truecharts, but I also have a few custom helm charts for private applications. Just dropping k8s support in truenas is imo a big mistake. Adding Docker as an option is all well and good. but don't just break existing stuff which took a lot of setup

Thanks for a good I advice to save apps' data in host paths :) Which I followed

I migrated away from truecharts and moved everything over to jails for the time being with jailmaker. I have one docker jail running all my apps and I hope to never deal with pvc storage ever again.

so true. I lost my valheim world because back then heavy script did not exist. So many hours lost. But I am back in Valheim but on a Linux VM on my proxmox server. Also the communication and help from truecharts was also very bad.

Updates with truecharts were always a disaster. Then I just notice my apps from it stopped updated. Spent last weekend redoing them all on a dedicated docker host.
