Antique Desk Refinishing

Fastest and best way to refinish a wood piece of furniture or other wood project. In this example I refinish an antique solid oak drop leaf desk. Sand off the old finish, rebuild, and apply a new finish. It's not trash if you can refinish it!

The desk came out beautiful. I’m really loving the texture of the wood

This is so awesome!! I just got a relatively good condition roll top desk and am thinking of doing this! I’d like a lighter wood tone than what it is now… hoping I can do it!

I have a desk almost exactly like yours and need to refinish it. My grandfather put wood grain contact paper on one side and when I removed it some of the finish came off.

I would like to see you fixing all the cracks and problems that's the hard part..

I have the exact same desk. I can't take apart the cubbies on top! Can I still restore it?

I would of sanded it smooth and just apply 5 thick coats of linseed oil

Correct, it was not what I refer to as an antique but an old desk

Great job. Just wondering what sander you use.

My god the skill is incredible. I tried doing a flat table top and the stain wasn't consistent.

Why did you choose to sand all the pieces rather than use a chemical stripper first? Was it because the scrapes and scratches were too much? Or some other reason?

Are the hinges the only thing that are holding the lid up? Are those standard butt hinges?

So... If you already have it all taken apart, fixed and sanded, why not stain it all then and put it together when it's done, instead of putting together and stain then? Just trying to find the most effective way to do a similar project

You would never take apart a good antique ....unless some pieces were missing ....
