Thinking that delay line is based on the set and reset of ferrite cores, with you having a string of cores, with each pulse of current of opposite polarity flipping the cores to the alternate state, basing the current strength of the flip on the sum of the drive and the signal output of the previous stage. Thus the cores all will flip state on each clock, just that feeding in a pulse at the beginning will make that first core set to the opposite state, and this then propagates down the line of cores, and at the output the pulse is xored with the clock pulse phase, and gives a pulse out, delayed by the number of cores, and with a resolution equal to the clock pulse.

BBC is Brown Boveri Corporation, bought over by Metrawatt, and before that it was Asea Brown Boveri, and originally Brown Boveri. Big manufacurer of electrical switchgear and industrial control and measurement equipment, and a lot of it still is in use after decades of service.

The business card is an electronic die! But also a tic-tac-toe game and Simon game that use the joystick. The QR code leads to the instructions, which I can't link here directly because youtube, but it's on our blog at the elimo engineering website. We were giving these away on our stand at the Hardware Pioneers event in London back in October.

Please make a separate video about the FET probe. And if there is something wrong, please try to find the source for the low amplitude measurement.

Metrawatt made quite a bunch of multimeters for BBC and later ABB. I had a little brother, an M 2005 with ABB branding. It had a broken range switch, so I contacted Metrawatt some years ago - and they still had spare parts and send them to me - 28 years after EOL... Works again and still bang on.

I would love to see the FET Probe Video!

Miniatur Wunderland is the project of former German record producer Gerrit Braun. It houses the world's largest model railway, and Gerrit's aim is to have enormously detailed dioramas representing every major city and tourist spot across the entire planet. It has so far cost 37 million Euro.

Really liking how the background and the desk have evolved and the layout has come into its own. The background with the shelves and slowly being populated with viewer send in stuff and other gadgetry looks really good. 🙂

I have a BBC Metrawatt "portable bench meter" (bench meter with batteries) from about the same time. The input connectors are indeed spring-loaded clamp connectors so that you can easily connect bare wires. It's real handy. It still keeps the calibration to within one count of our calibrated 6½ digit Keysight meter at work.

I love to see The Art of Electronics book back in the shelf, a friend gifted me that version a year ago!

The business card from Elimo is an electronic dice (or die) by the look of it. 🎲

Miniature Wonderland in Hamburg is amazing!

I used one of those BBC meters back in the day at my day job. They were handy because you could adjust the angle of the display to suit, i.e. when trying to use the meter inside panels etc.

Would have killed for a fancy multimeter like that BBC back in the 80s. We were still using analog meters in college. Separate Bakelite cased ohm, volt and ammeters with the associated mess of cables.

Hi Dave, regarding the Ambit pump, it's actually not an infusion pump but rather a type of Patient Controlled Analgesia pump which is done through a peripheral nerve catheter or in this guy's case most probably some sort of cervical plexus catheter. These are placed usually before surgery under ultrasonographic and/or electrical nerve stimulation control in the direct vicinity of nerves/plexuses. After surgery they would provide either constant flow of anaesthetic for pain relief or would inject a bolus of the anaesthetic on a press of a button if the pain is too strong. And you're right the disc is an antibacterial filter to keep the catheter free of germs upon disconnecting the pump (you don't need an antibacterial filter on venous infusions as the blood in the blood vessels has the ability to neutralize small quantities of bacteria effectively).

FWIW, it's Rah-Lee, North Carolina, not Ray-Lee, North Carolina. 👍

Source: am from North Carolina and live in neighboring Chapel Hill, NC.

Also, "yes, , please" to a video on the FET probe. 💯

That Ambit pump thing looks pretty wild. I've also had shoulder surgery due to a mountain biking accident, but thankfully all I needed for pain in that case was a couple of Oxy-codone tablets ever day for about a two weeks afterwards, and then some Tylenol for about another week or so. Still, not a fun experience at all.

Hi Dave,
Thank you for featuring my USB Power Injector in The Mailbag. I hope it proves useful to you at some point. The included standoffs are feet, so you don't scratch your desk.

I would absolutely love to have one of these BBC / Metrawatt DMMs as my main meter! The dodgy range switch would probably benefit from putting some plastic compatible grease into its ratcheting mechanism and shaft bearing.

that Delorean circuit is a sweet idea Dave!.
i think it would have looked even better on a black background..(with the car itself still white background, so you can see the wires n dark components easy)
it would be even better if ya could power up the circuit! ..like flash some leds around the wheels to animate them like they are rolling, and changing to fire color...and others around the car body that would simulate lightning effect

The small size of components these days is crazy. I had to replace a couple of 0201 sized resisters on a games console recently, just getting them out of the reel without losing them is a nightmare!
