I'd put a wooden top on the toolbox, then mount the vice to that. Put a thin filler piece in first to take up the void where the rolled steel lip of the box sticks up, then some 3/4 ply on top of that. You could leave a 1" or so overhand all the way around. This will give you a sturdier mount for your vice, and also a proper little workbench as well.

Personally, I would avoid using four swivel castor's. It may sound like a good idea for maneuverability but from personal experience once the chest gets bogged down with weight it becomes harder to turn and steer. Instead of fighting with two swivels, then there's four to contend with. Also, if the floor isn't completely level, it is more prone to drifting because it has no in line tracking.

If the top is used as a work surface and a area for a vise, put a piece of plywood on the top. That tool box top is relatively light sheet metal that doesn't have any reinforcement.

Just my two cents worth but hope the box serves you well.

Wally-world has magnetic trays and holders for the side of the cart. There's one for holding cans (WD-69, Liquid Wench, etc), one for holding skew drivers upright, and there is one that's just a simple tray to put extra Ikea parts into. Oh, there is also one that's a paper towel holder. The casters are a GREAT idea. I will be doing that as soon as I can empty my cabinet.

We kept some old fixed plastic wheels (2 with lock latches) from some forgotten thing for years out in the sheds. One day I got the idea to fix them to the bottom of a tall bookcase. That enables it to be pulled (gently) away from the wall every few months for dusting the skirtings. Take the books off, and it's a LOT easier to move elsewhere altogether. So, in 'custom' situations and/or for occasional necessary work that such items have the potential to make easier, the justification for 'sparing' cheap but usable stuff does kick in.

You should install all 4 LOCKABLE swivel casters. It is so freaking obvious!

Love the new intro today. Yep tool boxes on wheels always test my patience.

I've always hung my wrench holders, you could put pegs or bolts on the side and hang them on the chest. Then it frees up a drawer. Great channel, just came across it!

Cool! Got a new Sears box and has same wheel issues, glad to learn the bolt pattern is “universal.” I’ll be replacing with the higher upgrade orange/red poly wheels, swivel and lock on one end, fixed on the other. True, difficult to handle when heavy if all wheels rotate. Added plywood top before putting vise on top, gives nicer surface to work on.

I live in Costa Rica and I watched this video becuase I am done with my 3 tier stanley toolboxes where you have to take all out to find a tool. Lucky me I went to the local hardware store and I think I found the exact model he is using (Start with C and ends with N). These are great hacks I will apply to my new toolbox, Thank you welll done and entertaining to watch.

Thank you for sharing. I received a craftsman tool box and the first thing I did was to purchase replacement wheels, cut a plywood base, drill out the holes and fasten with bolts, washers and nuts. Much simpler to do it first thing, right off the bat. Although, it was rather finicky removing the bottom drawer.

Cool. A long wobble extension would ease caster replacement. A reverse wrench rack might allow you to place both sets in same drawer (worked for me). You can put a plywood top with a 2" overhang (one on side or many) which makes clamping items down real easy. 🔧

A plate under the vice is needed. That sheet metal is thin and will deform

I just got just like the one you have last week. It was on sales at Lowe's for much cheaper than what I was looking at last year. I am a DIY so all the laid around tools now are perfectly organized in this tool chest. I really like it very much. All the draws are smooth when I push and pull them in and out.

Amazon sells the wrench holders like you have. These hold 16 wrenches and the main thing is they have what they call a REVERSE type. Turn one with the big end to the front of your drawer and the other with the little/narrow end at the front of drawer but all wrenches face same direction. Red for standard and black for metric on all my socket and wrench holders.

I used the wheels from my toolboxes to make furniture dollies, they're great for 2x and plywood storage carts and anything else you need mobile around your shop
