Building A File Server Out Of Used Parts

Today I'm going to show you how to build a NAS (Network Attached Storage) out of all used parts. Having a File Server on your network makes backing up and storing files that multiple computers can use easy. However, it can be expensive building a file server out of new parts. I'm going to show you how to do it on the cheap out of all used parts.

In 2012 my old movie theater server was ran off Ubuntu and many old hard drives😂, wished we had TB hard drives then. Even made a dedicated in home wifi for anyone that wants to watch anything on the in house network. It was a great thing

The reason for the storage size discrepancy is because on the NAS side it sees 1Gb (1, 000, 000, 000 bytes) where as Windows sees 1GiB (1, 073, 741, 824 bytes). This is due to computers count in binary, so a round number in binary 100 0000 0000 is 1024 in decimal. Where decimal 1000 is seen as 11 1110 1000 in binary but isn't a "round" number in binary. So 1, 073, 741, 824 (decimal) is referred to as a Gigibyte (note spelling) and 1, 000, 000, 000 (decimal) is a Gigabyte. Hard drive makers were notorious for using gigabytes, and not gigibytes in the marketing for their drives, which is why after formatting a new driver appears smaller than what it says on the box.

Thanks for your great video. Could you please do an updated video on this, or maybe a refresh in case there is better or newer software to use.

Great video! Setting up a server with similar parts and TrueNAS didn't feel like a great fit. Will try out XigmaNAS. I only have one 4 tb drive for the moment for media storage and I want to add more drives later. Is it fairly easy to do in Xigma?

Love the Three Stooges-esque snapping at 7:50 too. :)

Great video

I am gonna try it on an old Dell T3500 workstation ( 3.3Ghz Xeon ) with 18GB of RAM

I know it's been like forever since you posted this, but do you use wifi, or ethernet for your servers?

@cybercpu tech : is it possible to install xigmanas on a sff system that has 1 drive only? To handle the OS and data. This is more for trial purpose. Since I don't have a case yet that will support 4+ drives. Just something to start with.

Great video. I have no clue on the pronunciation of Xigmanas either. Would xylophone be a clue though? ;-)

I know this is a year old video but I must ask. Is the "current" storage server running fbddr2. I ask just because that ram looks like the ram I have in a box. If you need more I have like 10 lbs of them.

That's for video. I have a nas4free movie server but I wanted to see if anything has changed with the software since I thinkine runs version 8 or something like that.

well the most expensive part of server is the hardrives, you can get away with whatever cpu and borad as long as it have 2 free pcie, one for sata card and one for nic, one of my file server use a core2quad, and 4 gig of ddr2 ram

The name is really simple. Just call it like greek letter "Sigma". XigmaNAS -> just say it Sigma NAS.

is it possible to run xigmasnas off a pc that has only 1 drive for os/data? This is for a trial to play around with xigmanas, since I don't have a case yet that will support 4+ drives. Just wanted to have something on the home network that I can put files on to get from other machines..so I'm not always using USB drives like the old day sneaker net with floppies LOL

Nice video bud. Are you using ECC RAM? If not, any reason why not?

What case is that you are using on your 12 bay NAS?

How to pronounce "XigmaNAS"? Say its X as a "S", and you get Sigma NAS. (Sigma is a Greek alphabet letter, BTW. Scientists and engineers are fond of using Greek, and sigma is used in the engineering standard Six Sigma.)
