Jeor went to The Wall entirely by choice. He wanted his son Jorah to be in his prime as the ruler of Bear Island, rather than waiting for his father to die before becoming Lord. He abdicated his position and took the black so his later years were spent doing something honorable. One hell of a character.

This was just about as painful as it could be for jorah, he heard two facts within 30 seconds, his father truly cared deeply for his men, and they were the ones who stabbed him in the back

This was back when the character development was still so great that despite never sharing one scene together, we see true pain and sadness in Jorah upon learning about his dad.

I imagine that, especially if you knew Jeor Mormont personally, hearing the specific manner in which he died would be one of the most heartbreaking things you’d ever hear.

Jonah has been gone for too long. His father died beyond the wall never knowing of his son quest for honor. His cousin died protecting her own rebel king at the red wedding. Soon he will return only to find his 10 year old niece fighting a giant to the death. You almost feel sorry for him.
