The Mirage Pipe Mystery in Super Mario Sunshine

Super Mario Sunshine is a seaside dream with plenty of things to love and hate. However, perhaps there's more layers to this dream than it appears. In Ricco Harbor there is a mysterious pipe the player cannot reach due to being out of bounds. Based on its location it should exist in a different area... But it does not. This is the Mirage Pipe mystery of Super Mario Sunshine, so I hope you enjoy this look at something peculiar!

If I was a Nintendo worker, I would put a random pipe or door in every single level and happily watch videos like these trying to know why they’re there

Sunshine modder here :) In the E3 build of the game there was a pipe on both islands. ricco's distance model also has an early design for the sand bird tower as well. Even the vertex coloring on the 2D tree matches that of the vertex coloring in the E3 build of the game.

Ah yes, the mysteries of the backgrounds in Mario Sunshine. There are some parts that are known to be leftovers from previous versions of the levels so maybe, just maybe there originally really was a pipe there.

The background might have been made before the green pipe was converted into a manhole cover or moved.

I wonder if you used to access the sewers using pipes, and it's a leftover from that. Or maybe they switched the places of the 2 islands later in development.

Pipes could of also been used as a placement holders for man holes in testing, and they just copied objects on the island, and never replaced it properly

I’m legitimately shocked that I didn’t really think about that pipe. Another possibility is that originally the pipe to the lily pad minigame was on that particular island in an earlier point of development, and the mirage pipe was placed there in Ricco Harbor assuming that it would stay that way. But then the same sadistic dev who made the pachinko level decided to put it on the other Island instead, just to make it that much more painful to get the Shine, and then they simply forgot to alter the background of Ricco Harbor to reflect the change.

I cannot count the amount of times I tried swimming against the barrier to try and get through it and swim to the island when I first played the game, I just love looking around games even when I know nothing (notable) is there.

I try to always play Mario Sunshine during the Summer. It just feels like a summer game to me.

The sewer entrance on the real island was originally a pipe. The "mirage" island's proxy was created at that time. The reachable island's pipe was changed into a sewer entrance, and the "mirage" was not.

It's just developer oversight.

I think its interesting that Sunshine and its areas are all kinds of states yet not quite the same. In the M portal for Ricco Harbour it shows a old version of Pinna Park in it or if you go to Bianco Hills the Helipad isnt in Ricco Harbour you can see. It shows it wasnt finished but gives you a glimpse on what was built upon

Mario Sunshine videos are my favorite kind, I can never have enough of them

It would be really cool if someone were to remove all the invisible walls from the sea so that we can float over to them and see how the island model changes up in each level. Especially in Pianta Village, I wanna see what the rest of the island other than Pinna Park looks like at night.

We need a sunshine remake that allows us to swim or turbo nozzle to the other levels, it could work just like Bowser's fury

There can be a few ways we look at this.

1. We could look at it as a general mistake that the warp-pipe was there.

2. We could look at it as it was left over from a previous design-decision(before they decided on the manhole covers) that was forgotten and wasn't changed in this level.

3. We could look at it as they switched the islands by mistake, and that this Island was never meant to be there.

4. We could look at it at as maybe an act of defiance against the decision to have a manhole cover there, on an Island, and a developer/designer decided to sneak the pipe in the background of the level to show what it "should have been" instead, before some stupid board meeting or manager change decided on the manhole-covers.

Manhole-covers are something very big in Japan, and are extremely detailed. Each prefecture has their own detailed style and some are even very colored, so I assume this was the reason this Isle had their own detailed manhole covers, and why they decided to keep with the theme of the manhole cover, even on an Island.

Wait...people didn't like the heat waves? That was my favorite part of the game's aesthetic as a kid. It always fascinated me so much to watch.

As time goes on, more of these will come and go. I wonder how long it will really last tho. With the internet and games being torn apart faster than ever things like this get harder and harder to exist or last due to updates being standard.
