I suffer pain due to 7 back surgeries within 3 months. Degenerative spine disease and broken back from an accident. The pain is so intense even my pain management doctor has told me that while the pain scale only goes to ten I know you’ve seen many days at a level of 20. Morphine, Dilaudid, and Oxycodone daily was my life, no more! I’ve learned to have pain is a natural thing from an injury but suffering is something you choose to participate in. When I realized that and started to fight back I started to make major improvements. Three of my doctors have proclaimed to me that I’ve made dramatic positive change when they just a short time ago they all were concerned if I would literally survive. Not only am I going to survive I’m learning to walk again and I’m going to thrive. Choice, determination and perseverance while in and of themselves is a painful thing choice is a powerful powerful thing when you learn how to manage it.

You cannot remove suffering. We need it. The best we can do is minimize it and handle the best possible way.

“Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.” The cause of suffering is attachment. Attachment to permanence of gain, fame, praise, pleasure. And the rejection of loss, defamation, blame, and pain. (8 worldly winds). I would also add in there lack of patience as a huge contributing factor in suffering as it prevents us from surrendering to the present moment and makes us want to be in a time (past or future) that isn’t currently real. To live in an illusion, and be dissatisfied with the present conditions, leading to a reality gap and suffering.

The antidote is detachment. To transcend all of these comings and goes and seeing them as natural and normal as the changes in the seasons or the weather.

One way to do that, as Jordan says, is to live life as a form of play, or as a teaching or lesson. Buddhist philosophy

there is no avoiding suffering. the obstacle is the way. avoiding suffering is avoiding life! suffering is beautiful. we are servants to life. and as such life favors its biggest supporters. getting out of bed, making food. these are basic examples. but what happens when you push through that pain? life opens up to you in unbelievable ways.

Seeing Pedersen in Athens makes me think that the future generations might see him as Sokrates/Plato of our time. He has also started his own University just like Plato did.

To exist is to suffer, thus the thing to do is to embrace the suffering that is unavoidable and oft necessary for growth, while combatting the suffering that is avoidable and that which is all too oft unnecessary

People suffer not because they deserve to suffer but because they've gotten used to the feeling of suffering.

What I think I caught here, is mindsets. My son comes to mind.

A year or two ago, he told me that he's never worked a day in his life. 😲🤔 Now mind you he both loves to play (gaming, kids etc) and he is a very hard worker. His explanation?

He loves what he does. So to him it is not work. For example, in his younger years, he work at a wholesale pizza shop. Why did he love it so? First and foremost, he got to make the very pizzas he loved and grew up eating. He wasin heaven. 😊

Now he gets to play in the dirtand operate big machines amd makes good money doing it.
Even though circumstances are sometimes tough, his mindset has not changed.

As Eckhart Tolle says "suffering is nessacary until you realise its unnecessary".
