Flying a helicopter on Mars: NASA’s Ingenuity

290 million kilometers away NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter has taken the first step towards a new type of space exploration.

Hovering 3 meters above the Martian surface before rotating 90 degrees and safely landing - this was the first powered flight on another planet.

In this video we explore the challenges of this achievement and ask what it means for the future of space exploration.

We started flying only just over 100 years ago, now we fly on Mars! Fantastic achievement, I wish the first pioneer of flying sees that...

This is mind boggling since I saw it yesterday ... My mind is finding it difficult to comprehend this fact that we just remotely flew a mini helicopter in another freaking planet

The first flight on Mars is truly a great milestone -- it is really hard to even get there in one piece, to say nothing about operating for an extended time in a very harsh environment. very few nations have even attempted landing anything on Mars, and fewer yet succeed despite putting their best skills and efforts to the task.

This video shows (2:27 and later) but does not quite explain that the Mars Helicopter has been thoroughly tested on Earth in a chamber where martian atmosphere had been recreated. So it was not only the theory and extrapolations -- there was a good amount of experimental evidence on how the design would perform on Mars. Getting it to Mars and flying it there was of course a tremendous challenge beyond making in fly on Earth!

NASA intelligence make us to see millions miles away .Many thanks to scientists of NASA .

Another fantastic achievement in science in which aerodynamic theories, material science etc., the latest knowledge is tightly packed. Appreciating it & due respect to all kinds of efforts behind it, I can't help chuckling. The machine looks like a bug!

Is it just me or is the audio in this video a bit off (the main commentary is very quite and the brief interviews are very loud)?

Atmosphere is quite welcoming then

Great video! It would be a big help if you also put the name of the interview subjects in the description, so it's crawlable by search engines and copyable by me!

I suppose some meteorological data is necessary to safely plan Ingenuity's flights, as Mars is known to have storms. Is there anyone who knows about this and can share some information here?

mow we have the possibility of lifting a rover by blimp . at transporting. an rover to a new areas & setting down for a closer look at the area of choice, & the driving prospect gov ns us & limits us now travel around the planate. is Possible .

How can a helicopter fly when there is no air on Mars?

How do yu create lift without an atmosphere this is amazing.

The era of the drone flight scene reaches Mars soon we shall see nothing but left and right Panoramas and vistas like in every other movie, tremendously valuable to science of course, terribly boring for us just like those neighborhood views in ever damn movie even Christmas movies have drone flights why? Why o why the endless filler. JJ. :)
