Tara Brach: Healing Depression with Meditation, Part 1 (2018/08/01)

Most people get depressed at times, and many suffer greatly from bouts of major depression. At the heart of the suffering is the experience of severed belonging—of being imprisoned in the pain of separation, unworthiness, unlovability and hopelessness. These two talks explore several meditation practices that reconnect us with our natural aliveness, openheartedness and awareness. They empower us to develop our inner resources, energize us to awaken, free us from rumination and remind us that we are not our depressive thoughts and feelings. The growing realization of the loving awareness that is our home heals the very roots of depression.

Thank you so much for this. I was born into the iraq war, neglected and abused my entire life & I’ve been trying so hard to feel better, I have a fear that my default self is a person who is in shock and frozen in time given that my foundational years have been spent confirming that. Years of therapy, medication, self medication, guided meditations, yoga & a cat later im still really really struggling. But yesterday I got a jasmine plant. I feel rooted & hopeful… my brain feels extra malleable. Thank you. Thank you thank you. To anyone reading this I love you and I see your suffering and your pain and i am here with you. and we’re all in this together ❤

"The loss of the unlived life" puts into words exactly how I have been feelign a majority of my life, I had a pretty visceral reaction to that. Mourning the person I coud gave been without CPTSD and significant childhood trauma. Finding your talks has been incredinly healing to my soul.

I'm so relieved to have found this talk. I'm at rock bottom right now and despite all of the inner work I've been doing, there has been so much resistance and grief. This has been a great comfort.

I've struggled with depression since before adolescence. It's amazing how pervasive and difficult it can be to treat. Eventually my issues became compounded and I couldn't deal with life unless I was high on something. Depression can and does lead to addiction. Now I'm living one day at a time and trying to stay healthy, balanced, and sane. Mindfulness is a pillar of my practice.

That gave me a lot to think about. I'll have to listen to it again to let it all sink in. The quote at the end about "why are you in prison when the doors are open" really hit home for me. Stay blessed Ms. Brach. You are gifted.

Just got a cancer diagnos today, and was struggling how to accept it.
It might kill me in time or not, something will eventually for sure,
Walked around later and saw people passing. Yes that one’s gonna die one day and that one, some still living birds flew by, not bothering about their coming death!
And then you Tara explaining it, I will get it! Thank you🙏

I’m suffering with depression. It is hard for me to pull myself out of the negative thoughts. Now I learned how to notice the thoughts(I don’t have to believe them) and bring myself back to presence. This episode has so much insights and aspirations. Thank you so much, Tara! I’m so grateful to you 🙏🙏❤️❤️!

Your soothing, loving voice has helped me often, Tara. I spent one painful afternoon in bed just listening to these videos on autoplay. It was all the energy I could muster in deep, dark depression.

So incredibly helpful. I paused the video throughout the practices to give myself more time and space to feel the answers to Tara’s questions come up within me.

Thank you for this talk. Depression is suffering. Spiral down thinking is the root of the issue and self limiting beliefs feed off our negative thoughts. It’s the hardest thing to go through but the way you explained makes it more tolerable. Honing in on connection is key like you mentioned

Thank you for this Tara. The way you speak about depression puts words to feelings I've felt for so long. I cried on-and-off for the whole video. I hope to free up that "log jam" and be my fullest self one day.
