Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

The smile on Howard's face when Jimmy entered the room. My guy always admired him, if only Chuck could do the same

Love that Howard says “*our* line of work” cuz he considers Jimmy a legitimate lawyer and a peer.

Ahhh, back when we still thought Howard was the main bad guy to root against

I love how Howard says "sometimes in OUR line of work" to Jimmy. It shows that he truly recognizes and respects Jimmy as a peer, another lawyer. Something that Chuck would never do.

I feel so bad for both Jimmy and Howard here. Jimmy is genuinely trying to help Chuck out of his love for him. Howard is forced to be the scapegoat out of loyalty to Chuck and his vendetta against Jimmy. Say what you will about Chuck being right about Jimmy, he turned on or manipulated the people who actually cared about him, and set the Saul journey into motion. And Howard didn’t deserve to die for it.

Howard’s smile and “What can we do for ya Jimmy?” comes across as sarcastic when you first watch the show, but now with the context of the whole series it feels very genuine. Howard really liked Jimmy.

This scene is different now. Jimmy thought he had support from his brother but was being lied to and manipulated before he eventually found out the truth.

It's great to confirm that Howard's smile was genuine, he was clearly enjoying the Ned Beatty Network reference.

1:14 Now that's it's all over, in retrospect, you can tell Howard likes Jimmy but his hands are tied.

Not sure it was intended since they said that their initial idea was for Howard to be the bad guy, but you can already tell here that he didn't dislike Jimmy at all. He sees him interrupting his private meeting while initiating the conversation with a pretty unprofessional movie quote, and he just smiles. He respects his hustle. He admires the guts he's showing by facing up to these people that are clearly of much higher status professionally speaking, and daring to turn the room into his own little theater. The signs were there from the start.

Are you telling me that trashcan just happens to break like that? No! He orchestrated it! Jimmy!

Looking back, Howard really did everything he could to help Jimmy, Kim, AND Howard, and all he got for it was spite and revenge.

God, this hits so different after watching the rest of the series.

In retrospect, this was one of many scenes that Howard and Jimmy look like two younger brothers arguing about how best to take care of their older brother.

For Howard, it’s doing everything Chuck tells him to do. For Jimmy, it’s doing what’s best for Chuck.

That “okay” is great. Makes me feel unwelcomed.

In a parallel universe, Call Better Saul, Jimmy and Howard are best friend and badass lawyers.
