Picasso was famously prolific, leaving thousands of paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures; Vermeer left just 74 attributed to him in 1866; today, only 34 are firmly attributed to him. No one stood behind Vermeer, demanding he paint faster, and aside from the monetary value and snob appeal, more honest art lovers would probably pick any of his to own and live with, over the bulk of Picasso's output. I think the biggest mistake made by artists is "house painting, " i.e. loading a brush with some color or mixture, then applying it all around, until the brush is clear, then repeating. My strong suggestion is to Stop and Look at what each stroke has left, added, changed, before making the next. If it worked, and the color is right, make another stroke; pause, repeat. If not, figure out why, and either modify it or find where the color on the brush may be more appropriate. Especially for beginners, the chance that they mixed the perfect hue and value on the palette first try is next to nil, and just because there is 20 times too much mixed does not require that the artist apply all of it to the canvas, as if it were a slab of siding.
