I set my son up with a retro pi set up for the older 8 & 16 bit systems with a pi zero w and I got more then I expected out of it, he loves it

My first Pi was a Zero (non w) that was free on Pi magazine. I had it configured as a NAS with a laptop HDD, it was perfectly fine. Of course that was my entry drug, now I've got a 2, (I killed my 3), and a 4 and 400. I took my Zero W to Butlins for the Quo weekend with Retro Pi and a Bluetooth controller to fill the hours between loud music.

I have a Zero and let me tell you, is an amazing emulator machine. NES, Master System, Atari 2600, Genesis, Turbografx-16, NeoGeo, ScummVM are running full speed with Retropie.

The sweet spot is the often overlooked Pi 3A+. Identical specs to a 3B+ but with the Pi “A” form factor and only 512MB RAM. Perfect for a headless server using less power than a 4B but the full size HDMI is extremely useful for initial setup and debugging. And only $25. All the old Pi “A” accessories fit and work. I love your Pi Zero W as a wireless print server for a USB printer. My old Canon printer does have built in WiFi but it’s garbage. The Pi Zero W as a print server makes it useful (and who really wants to buy a new printer?).

I've got my zero in a gutted Atari flashback autobooting from raspbian lite. Into Stella stand alone emulator. Joystick ports are running off gpio and buttons are running as keyboard presses via an Arduino. I love it.

raspberry pi zero w !!!
Lee i plan on making a special version of linux just for the pi zero
I mean i made it useable for once
I played
Minecraft pi (survival)
Minecraft java 1.12.2
Bad apple 720p 60fps
And many more things and i gotta day it feels responsive

How did i do it ?
I basically looked at what the pi does when it boots and disabled some services

I pulled a wor move on it

Anyways
Lee please do more pi zero w videos
Experimenting with it is fun

I have used my Pi Zero W for a variety of projects to refresh my Linux knowledge and learn new tricks. I've ran a few low resource emulators and had a Wordpress website hosted on it. My favorite use is a bare metal 8088 emulator running DOS and as a command line Linux box to mess around with. The website for my local group is now hosted on a 3B+ and a 400 is my daily driver. Still, the Zero has a special place in my heart and I still use it regularly.

Puppy and Tiny Core are great OS’es for the Pi Zero W. When I’m writing it’s actually really nice to have a good minimalist OS with few distractions. Tiny Core’s GUI also reminds me a bit of OS 9 which is fun, and the system specs are actually similar to a Mac from the era.

It looks like you're using a Samsung Orange Micro SD card. They are far to slow to use on any Pi. Use Scan Disk Ultra and the speeds are much better. I build NES cartridges with Pi Zero W in them for retro gaming. They run pretty good.

New to the Pi world, initially purchased a pi 4b for 3d printing. Then added a pi 400 and have now replaced the 4b with a Zero W for printer. The Zero works great assuming you don't want to throw on a camera on the printer. 👍🏼

Just like yourself I bought one with some other items from ada fruit and did the same thing experimented on it tried all possible desktop options didn't work for me so I ended up using it with retropie for my kids... Now I got lakka running and it's amazing... Runs, snes, and neo-geo amazing performance.
Maybe your next vid give lakka a try.
I personally thank you for your videos I have learned so much...
God bless.

Mine seems to run much much quicker than that.
You can do a little overclock too. Also great to use as a pi hole.

I've got a couple of Pi Zeros connected to cameras which I use with MotionEye OS and as a webcam. Great little boards but if you're going to play games, just get a Pi4!

I use a pi zero W as a Maria DB server it's seems ok for fun. With a full OS on it. It's handy for running many command line terminals.
