– Czech Bird of the Year 2023 –

The Czech Society for Ornithology announced the Czech Bird of the Year 2023 today. Last year's royalty European greenfinch is followed by the common pochard - a diving duck whose numbers in our country have been declining unstoppably in the Czech Republic. By awarding the title to the pochard, ornithologists want to draw attention to the dismal state of our pond landscape and to the fact that the common pochard is still a game species in the Czech Republic, even though it is globally endangered.

I also went hunting for the common pochard this afternoon, but fortunately only in my archive. I was surprised to discover that more than five years have passed since I last filmed these red-eyed mannequins. Back then I managed to capture them on the partially frozen surface of the Nové Mlýny lakes, where they were foraging for food underwater along with other waterfowl species. The birding section of the Czech Internet is now flooded with a wave of photos of the common pochard, but few of them show why we actually call these birds diving ducks. I sincerely hope that my archive footage will shed some light on this 😊
