Sean D. Kelly - Heidegger's Later Works (Part 1)

A selection of readings from Martin Heidegger’s late work, focusing on his discussion of thinking, poetry, gods, works of art and things. Late Heidegger was consumed with the question how cultures in the modern West can gather and preserve meaningful possibilities of existence for the people who live in them. We will focus for some time especially on Heidegger’s reading of the German poet Hölderlin, whom he interprets as the paradigm of a poet who resonates with and preserves meaning in “destitute times”. We will also examine Heidegger’s difficult views concerning technology and its role in our modern world.

Honestly, I'm a bit confused in response to the statement (at 4:30) that Japanese has no word for "being/Sein". Japanese does indeed have such a word: "desu, " which comes from the phrase "de arimasu, " from the verb "aru" = to be/exist. This word is used for anything: "kore ga hon desu" (this is a book), "Boku ga Orandajin desu" (I'm a Dutch person), otenki ga warui desu (the weather is bad) etc. So this statement is not true. It might be true for Chinese, although I think they use "是", but it's not true for Japanese (and also not for Korean, which uses 이다). Honestly, I doubt there is a language that doesn't use a word for "being/existence."

If that which gathers is the temple, then the shoes could show up as the weakness of a slave, rightful for the contemptuous being. If that which gathers is the cathedral, then the poor, honest, god approved creature will show up, one that deserves pity and admiration. For US it shows up as a whole in how much is it worth? Will there be more QE, if there is, then it will soon be worth more! We are spiritually abandoned.
