This lecture course is pure gold if you’re interested in understanding “Being and Time”. Professor Kelly covers the phenomenology and holism aspects of the topic in greater detail than any published source that I’ve found. However if you’re new to “Being and Time”, start with Professor Dreyfus’ Phil 185 course first, since this recording series is missing several key lectures on, for example: Discourse, Disposedness, Understanding, and Anxiety.

Dreyfus and Kelly really show us what it means to teach philosophy. They’re translating an alien language for us and communicating in a language that we can understand.

Sean Kelly is SO GOOD at presenting this material. And I say that as someone who disagrees with him on some crucial points

I came back to these lectures to refresh my recollection on Heidegger. His is a philosophy that really moved me from the start, when I studied him in college. My college professor, Samuel Todes, was a brilliant man but was notoriously difficult to follow as a teacher. So I had to struggle along learning Heidegger from his teaching, but also on my own. Sean Kelly does a wonderful job of taking material that is extremely difficult to *truly* understand and making it comprehensible. So . . . nice lecture.

This was very helpful. I've been through B a T three times. There are levels to grasping it. One book that I have found essential is the Cambridge Heidegger Lexicon. That was actually the text that helped me breakthrough into a fuller understanding. Pricey but worth it if you're committed to understanding H. Just a suggestion.

3:13:30 The condition of possibility of the understanding of being for Dasein is Temporality (Temporalität).
This makes Dasein's transcendence possible.
Rooted in this transcendence is being-in-the-world (or 'Care', Dasein's basic constitution)
and this is what makes intentionality possible.

From most to least primordial it goes: temporality,
being-in-the-world (care structure)
intentionality.

How does understanding this work change one's relationship to life, day to day life, directly, indirectly, etc? What is the take-away? Is there a lifestyle change? An improvement of any kind? A practical application? A perceptual change?

Is there a link between. Being and Tiempo to Heidegger’s Black notebooks?

Would anyone be able to write down the books recommended and the main text used in the course?

Could anyone post Kelly's complete reading list of secondary texts?

Great to have access to these lectures, but…what’s the point, really? Good, form, God, Being…all for what? Just something to do while we’re here, I guess.

ProSeminar: Late Heidegger

Course Description

A selection of readings from Martin Heidegger’s late work, focusing on his discussion of thinking, poetry, gods, works of art and things. Late Heidegger was consumed with the question how cultures in the modern West can gather and preserve meaningful possibilities of existence for the people who live in them. We will focus for some time especially on Heidegger’s reading of the German poet Hölderlin, whom he interprets as the paradigm of a poet who resonates with and preserves meaning in “destitute times”. We will also examine Heidegger’s difficult views concerning technology and its role in our modern world.
