Jaws 1975: Out To the Ocean+Shark Hunt

"Jaws", 1975 American film directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Peter Benchley's 1974 novel of the same name.

Police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) with a marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and a professional shark hunter (Robert Shaw). Murray Hamilton plays the mayor, and Lorraine Gary portrays Brody's wife.

Shot mostly on location on Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, Jaws had a troubled production, going over budget and past schedule. As the art department's mechanical sharks often malfunctioned, Spielberg decided to mostly suggest the shark's presence, employing an ominous and minimalistic theme created by composer John Williams to indicate its impending appearances.

Spielberg and others have compared this suggestive approach to that of thriller director Alfred Hitchcock. Universal Pictures gave the film what was then an exceptionally wide release for a major studio picture, on over 450 screens, accompanied by an extensive marketing campaign with a heavy emphasis on television spots and tie-in merchandise.

It became the highest-grossing film of all time until the release of Star Wars in 1977.

Both films were pivotal in establishing the modern Hollywood business model, which revolves around high box-office returns from action and adventure pictures with simple high-concept premises released during the summer in thousands of theaters and heavily advertised.

It was followed by three sequels, all without Spielberg or Benchley, and many imitative thrillers. In 2001, it was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

For those who dont understand the bit at 2:41, back then, the cans were made of tin, not aluminum, so Quint crushing one is actually no small feat. Which makes Hooper crushing the Styrofoam that much funnier.

The fact that you don’t see the shark but how Spielberg builds up the tension is brilliant

Part of what makes this movie great is the chemistry between Brody, Hooper and Quint.

"That's real fine expensive equipment you brought on board Mr. Hooper. Not sure what the shark will make of it? Might eat it I suppose. Seen one eat a rocking chair one time." - Mr. Quint

I must've seen this like 50 times in my life but only now am I just noticing the change in Quint's demenour when he's on land vs when he's out on the Orca. He's excited to go out, it's what he lives for. He's damn good at what he does and he enjoys every second of it.
And later we find out why

Love 6:33. Just a subtle piece of acting but you can see genuine fear in Quints face for the first time as he realizes how big this shark is. Exceptional acting by Shaw. But what else would one expect from such a legend.

I like how nice Quint is to Brody. It’s like he understands out here in the water is not Brody’s expertise. But Quints anger still shows when Brody doesn’t want to do something. I just love that.
