To be fair the fingers are really big. I'd imagine they were avoiding clipping with the keys.

As a 3D animator who animated characters playing piano, I can say that it's absolutely common that the character doesn't play the song correctly. Animation is thought to be appealing at camera, and depending on the camera angle, if he played the song as it is, maybe the arms and hands wouldn't be composition wise correct. It's animated following the song beats so it seems like he's playing it, it's not like the animator doesn't give a s**t haha

Compared to other songs that weren’t animated “correctly”. This one actually sounds somewhat close to the actual version

I understand that it’s usually the right decision to animate pianos incorrectly but it’s fun to hear what the animation actually sounds like

This is literally a musical based movie how could they not animate it right

love how animators are standing their ground and showing interesting insight on this

While nearly every piano is animated incorrectly, we can't forget that one Tom and Jerry episode in which the piano is actually animated fully correctly. The time and effort put into that bit is certainly appreciated!!

Its like the Neil deGrasse Tyson pointing out the inaccurate placement of stars in the night sky of the Titanic tragedy in the movie

As someone who works in animation, it’s about composition, staging, and what works best for the camera angle. A rule in the art world is that you don’t need to draw what’s there, you need to draw what’s believable 🤷🏿‍♀️

usually music-focused movies don't disappoint, but man, come on!

What he actually played would make a killer final boss theme (in a horror game at least)

Actually the way they animated it is a great compromise between making it believable (in the sound, when the chrods go higher or lower, it's similar in the image), but also they animated it so it would look cool from their camera angles so I think they did a pretty good job 😊

I’m impressed with the fact that he was able to tell which keys were being played

Im now curious if the piano in mr peabody and sherman is animated correctly, including the other instruments he played

Guys just keep in mind that they are trying to capture the expressions of the character, the actions of his hands, and leave enough room for the stage lights in the background all while staying true to perspective. If his hand were to move any further, they would have to back the "camera" up to include everything, thus messing up the whole composition and making it look awkward and unnatural. This shot alone has so many elements that animators need to account for and there's just no way they could make everything true to life. In the end, they made the right decision to cut least important one as not to disrupt the essence of the scene. Hardly anyone will notice that the keys don't perfectly match the notes, but EVERYONE will notice if the perspective is warped. So just lend them a little leeway, animation is hard.

As someone with nearly 12 years of musical experience under my belt, it just has to look right, it doesnt have to _be_ right. Just like how when you are playing specific piece, it doesn't have to _be_ right it just has to _sound_ right. And this accomplishes that pretty well I'd say. Without stopping and going frame by frame, there pretty much is no way you'd know it was wrong unless you are both an expert pianist and you have perfect pitch, and even then it's probably not on screen long enough or shown at the right angle to catch any of that, especially not on your first viewing.

Honestly surprised how close it was to the OG, usually when their animated wrong, its extremely off, but here, it sounds like they at least tried to get it accurate

The actual song that was played doesn’t sound that bad honestly, the animators could’ve stuck to that one without any issues.

since a lot of comments dont understand why this happens:
Animators have to follow the storyboard, so that it doesnt ruin the composition that the director has already planned for during that stage. Especially in a shot like this, where perspective plays a very big role, if the hand is dragged too far away from the camera, it will ruin the initial composition, and will make the shot looks too complex and awkward. So it's the director's decision to either be realistic, or focus on visual composition. There's no right or wrong answer.

But this not always the case. Like the Gru's shot. I doubt following the actual notes will destroy composition. Other than saving animating time, they might be facing technical issues like the pose might be impossible for Gru's proportion to do, or the cloth simulation could go wonky if Gru's doing certain stuff. We never know.

As a pianist who did take some animation classes in college—if it looks right, it is right. Same for music... If it sounds right, it is right

Animation is all about the illusion
