While spinning motions can be useful in certain martial arts, with a sword facing one opponent, there's almost always a better option.

In situations where you're surrounded, or you're in some way compromised and have to spin, do what you got to do. But frankly you've already made a number of mistakes to get you here. That does not make it a good technique, that makes it the only option available.

The caveat here being the greatsword. There are multiple examples of the greatsword being used in crowd control situations or spins are incorporated, but they frankly look nothing like what Hollywood does.

This poor man is still defending his skill and research based opinion against people who want to die on weeb Hill. You sir, have my respect.

"After reviewing all the reasons you have stated for why spinning attacks are useful, I have come to the conclusion that you have confused your sword with a sledgehammer."

Link can fly with his spin. Maybe try that one! 😂

Also unlike unarmed martial arts where it comes with the benefit that most of the techniques from the spin look nearly identical until about halfway through, with a sword you know exactly where the arc of that sword is going the entire way through the spin, there really is only one way the sword can go following the momentum of the spin. Because the human body has more striking surfaces and points of articulation than a sword does, the options are a lot less limited in unarmed fighting.

All true, a spin is a situational maneuver at best and only if applied some how safely, which usually is only available when you know your distancing of opponents, and this is if you are dealing with multiples, in which is less of an intentional spinning attack but keeping yourself moving and rotating between threats, so to any who wanna practice it? Imagine in your mind as many people as your comfortable with and trying to avoid each of their ideal attacks at once. Can't say you'll win your imaginary fight but you'll learn more mobility and comfort with your weapon

I feel like the spin is mainly for fiction fights (like other moves) where the characters are so strong that just getting parried can throw your whole body put allowing the power to push you can readjust your positioning in a fictional fight

If youre ever in doubt just remember how silly that spin obi wan (older in the brown cloak) did when fighting darth vader. Left his back open while vader waited patiently for him to turn back around and strike at him

this makes light saber spins even more anoying. Sword fights should feel like some one trying to stop a deady thing touching thier body.

Well! that answers that. i feel responded to XD.
Last video i left a comment, and mentioned spinning in many martial arts being viable.
spinning back knuckles for example generating alot of force and being tricky to defend against.
But, you very nicely explained why that is totally unnecessary for swords specifically because of how they work to deal damage with minimal force. so, ok!
spinning in fencing is rather pointless. haha.
Except for the really big swords, of course. And i guess the reason why, is just like you said. the heavier swords *do* need that extra windup and fluidity to maintain speed/power.

Also when you spin with a shotput you do it so you can throw it away from you and I wouldn't recommend doing that with your sword during fencing

It's only useful for one thing.

Pretty fight choreography.

The spin has the same purpose in sword fighting as martial arts, it looks fancy on film

It’s not useless for getting yourself hurt or stylin’ on your opponents.

I need to show you Thibault's turns. They are not used for force maximization, but rather give options to escape subjections. A lot of people use them incorrectly by trying to force them as a technique, but they are responses to very specific circumstances.

What about lightsabers? In this case, having edge alignment is not required, and having momentum is crucial to shove your oponent's blade out of the way, since they repel each other. The fact that it is light or heavy depends on the version/universe/writer, but say you wield the darksaber and you are particularly guilty/not prepared, that makes it heavy, or you wield a regular lightsaber that behaves like a sword. Anyway, it would be nice to have you try all those different scenarios in a practical setting, in a lightsaber competition trying your best to be as accurate as you can to what we see in star wars. Also, I like the "battlefront 2" Luke Spin, because it starts far from the opponent and is used to bridge the gap.

I'll try spinning. That's a good trick!

When in the context of fighting multiple opponents, spinning whilst keeping the sword between you and the person you spin to face away from can be beneficial as it give you a window to check on the other opponent.

Spadone and greatswords are both force and precision because once you get them moving, they impart a lot of force. It's why we don't really spar with them or polearms in the same way we do with longswords. Saw a dude get KO'd through his helmet by a dane axe swung with minimal force for the purpose.
