Video by Dr. Dawn Elise Snipes on integrative behavioral health approaches including counseling techniques and skills for improving mental health and reducing mental illness.

People with HD find it difficult to discard possessions regardless of their actual value, consequently the things overflow the living space and hinder living function
Generally has onset before age 40 years, increased in severity after middle age, and is linked with social isolation, depression (14-54%), anxiety, AD/HD and PTSD were also found
In children with ADHD hoarding symptoms mediated the relationship between ADHD and oppositionality
Hoarding behaviors may present in up to 3.7% in children, 7.5% in college students, 25% of older adults
Behavior is a form of communication
People with HD often perceive themselves to be significantly more impaired with respect to their ability to tolerate emotions, pay attention and remember things than they actually are (Low self-efficacy)
Feeling fearful and being in a cluttered room were both associated with a decreased number of discarded items in people with low self efficacy and low distress tolerance. The opposite was true as SE and DT increased.

I realized during the past year that I had gone too far when I had my attic and two bedrooms stacked up. I have gone from one "hobby" to another over the past ten years. I save all kinds of things that I think I may use again. I've got furniture I haven't used for years stacked up in rooms like I will ever use it again. I finally decided I'm done. Since the beginning of the year I have carried away ten loads of junk to the dump and goodwill. Even after that I still have much more to go. I tried many times to do this but I couldn't bring myself to it. IDK how I finally had enough, but now I just want my house back. Good luck fellow hoarders!

Thanks for your explanations! Dr. Phil had a show today (July 30, 2021) about hoarding. So, I looked up “stop hoarding” on YouTube and your video popped up! You know, that show called “Hoarders” doesn’t really ever explain the why or how these things happen. Your video helped explain it. Now, I don’t think of myself as a hoarder, but I have those tendencies. I have a lot of stuff stored in boxes. I know that I must have dozens, maybe hundreds, of VHS tapes. These are part of collections, like Disney Movies, Musicals, Dance Instruction. I don’t want to give them up, but I know they haven’t been touched in 10, maybe 20 years. But, the real problem is papers. They were in piles, but some of the piles fell over. Now they are spread all over the floor. I am dealing with diabetes and depression and am being treated for both. So, the best recommendation I took away is spend 15 minutes a day dedicated to sorting papers. Will it help? Well, it won’t hurt!

Mine doesn't have anything to do with rejection or guilt. It's just that when I try to clean it stresses me out as opposed to someone stressing about its not being done. I'm doing better about tossing out magazines and catalogs.. Sometimes when I pick up something I want to keep I don't know where to put it. My grandmother lived with us when I was growing up and she always did everything. My mother was always telling me what I needed and didn't need to do. My mother mostly telling me what I didn't need to do. I'm more of a clutter person as to hoarding now. It bothers me and I can see in my mind what to do and how but when it comes to actually doing it I feel like a wall goes up and I run into. Preventing me from going forward. I'm very much a procrastinator.Sorry this was a long comment

I'm depressed and my mind is like spaghetti. I start to tidy but by the next day there's still clutter but in a different room. I just feel at a loss.😔 I have bought things online that I loved as a child. Anything that gives me a good feeling and memory stays as it comforts me. My husband has lots of his own clutter too.

Wow this is amazing! My mom was a hoarder and clearing out her place when she passed was stressful because it was so much stuff but she kept it very neat. I never made the connection with hoarding being a mental illness, I learned something new. Also I loved your tip about the clothes, to turn the hangers the wrong way. I'll definitely be using that one. Keep up the great work. Blessings 💕

I donated ton of s*** and then my father and my mother in law start going through the bag while I'm donating crap and be like oh I can use that or I can use that and it's like you can't. They have problems and refuse to admit their Hoarders

Is OCD related to hoarding? Or is there a subtype of OCD, which involves hoarding? I believe I may have OCD, and the hesitation, doubt, fear and stagnation are slowing me down in my quest to declutter my room. I have tons of papers and old schoolwork that I have a hard time getting rid of. I am taking it one day at a time, but I wonder what would help make me go quicker.

In what ways do you think hoarding disorder will increase in the next 18 months and how can you screen for it in your clients/students/supervisees?

Yes also, I save the coffee glass jars. But no more than 6 jars.
