Huh? that is unusual, a YouTube short with true and useful information. I can't remember the last time that happened.

I've hiked over 18, 000 (plus) miles, using these hiking poles. Your advice is spot on. These poles have greatly spared my knees. We use Leki hiking poles.

Basic skiing technique. Allows you to push easier and further since your fingers are allowed to peel a bit off the stick each time.

👍👍👍
Most snow skiers already know this, taught in beginner classes for exactly the same reasons you mention.
When you fall and put you hand down you hand doesn’t land on the pole.

I use either a 5 or 6 foot walking stick and concentrate on using only my legs, the walking stick I use mainly as a brake or anchor point when going up or down hills.

I find myself fatigued after gripping my pole too much! This helped a lot! Thank you!

I wish I didn't have expertise on this subject but I'm having to use 2 canes to get around Learned this exact method as being the absolute best way to use and not get tired while using these walking aids

Had this advice as a skier many years ago

I never even though of those advantages! I just liked how it felt to wrap my thumb up when I put my hand through the bottom, so I’ve always done it that way.

My poles will be here in an hour or so (from amazon). I can't wait to start but am so glad I saw this before I started. I would probably have used them incorrectly, and painfully, and given up. Thank you.

Great advise, thanks. I bet more than 50% of users are wrong.

I have done it the "right way" for almost 50 years. No more... it cuts off the circulation and now with Reynauds... my hands get painfully cold.

Moreover, with time you become dependant on the poles and you lose the core strength, that brings a whole new set of issues...

The best way to hold your poles is put them together and then with one hand grip both poles around mid-shaft.

I use Pacer Poles from the UK. They don’t com with straps and you don’t need them due to the ergonomic handle. They do have cords so you won’t lose your poles on a hill if you lose your grip which is highly unlikely.

I don’t use them but I’m glad I now know it.

Picked up a set at a thrift store and we use one each while playing Disc Golf on overland courses. They're superior to a walking stick and I'm old enough to avoid razing from the bullet proof crowd.👍
