In the past, airbenders seemed on the path to unassisted flight... so why was it lost to time until Guru Laghima and Zaheer?

I can't help but notice that the Airbenders during Wan's time have different tattoo markings on their head than the usual arrow markings we see on future Airbenders

Besides the construct of civilization as the reason. I'd add that the spirit portals were open prior to the dawn of the Avatar. Then once they became long dormant, when closed. It immediately severed spirituality physically. While ones individual spirituality was gradually in decline. The keys are how, if and when the story of Guru Laghima is fully told. As well as how it may coincide with the fact he's from the Northern Air Temple. Which is near where the spirits danced in the sky with the Northern Water Tribe, as Unalaq stated.

i like this theory. i remember Tenzin had a line that says an airbender must maintain their heaven and earth connection. airbender philosophy must have changed over time to value their earth connection as much as their spiritual side soon after they left the lionturtle. so unassisted flight disappeared and that cloudriding just fell out of popular use to reflect that change in culture.

Being objective, instead of flying they look like they're using air as Katara use water to slide in the air. And Zaheer's fly technique was more levitating than flying

Zaheer's "entering the void" is him loosing his connection with his physical body and seeing the interconnection of all things as essentially brahman. Think how Neo at the end of The Matrix finally sees the world as merely slightly differing lines of code. He doesn't just know that this is the nature of the matrix like how everyone else can read the code on the screen outside but he has an almost essential and spiritual connection with the understanding of the code behind the matrix to be able to do what he does. This is why other airbenders and even Tenzin who is not only more skilled but also more knowledgeable of airbending cannot reproduce the technique; because his connections with people, things, and places blind him to the source of nature and its functions.

Airbending Is so Misused, it's crazy. the amount of power that can be accomplished is unreal. that's why I was Soo happy when I saw Zaheer because he was the first Airbending villain that should us how airbending isn't just a peaceful element, it can be the most deadly as well.

It’s strange Zaheer said that in order to gain the ability to fly, you have to let go of you’re earthly tether. Which seems like many of the air nomads could do. Makes you think why this is

I think it’s because you have to let go off the people you LOVE, and airbender are LOVING people... so uhm yeah. ✨logics✨

I think the reason airbenders lost the flight ability is because of flying bisons who are their earthly attachments. From what we seen, the secret to unlocking flight is to let go of these earthly attachments, whatever tethers you to the earth.

And in terms of where you said guru laghima studied those ancient airbenders riding on clouds, the thing is in the air nation, nobody really believed that guru laghima flight was actually true, everyone thought it was an airbender children’s fairytale, even after zaheer unlocked it tenzin said himself he heard the legend of guru laghima and never thought it was actually true
