No wonder I struggled to learn Greek at Saturday Greek School. My parents and grandparents spoke Cypriot Greek and we were taught to speak and read Kalamaristika, which literally no one used at home. When I went to Cyprus and spoke Cypriot Greek, my cousins laughed at us! They looked down at those old expressions and words. The Cypriot diaspora preserved them.
The last time I ordered a coffee in a cafe in Cyprus in Greek, the waiter asked me what part of London I was from. You can’t win!

So interesting! I learned a bit of Greek in Cyprus. When I moved to Athens, the words I used puzzled the Greeks: pushchair was 'amaxshoui' !

As the daughter of Greek Cypriots I thoroughly enjoyed this. I grew up saying “Paticha” for watermelon and “Angoragi” for cucumber.

Greek Cypriot dialect is the closest to the ancient Greek, if we were to travel back in time and was to speak to a Greek of ancient times, the ancient Greek would have a better chance of understanding the Cypriot Greek than the Grecian Greek. If the Greeks from Greece want to experience what their ancestors dialect would have sounded like, then visit Cyprus.

Awesome program! I have watched a few Cypriot serials to work on my Greek, and was flabbergasted by the dialect. I love it! Thank you so much for this episode.

Thank you! This is so tremendously helpful. I'm married to a Cypriot, and have spent many months in Cyprus over the decades, but the Cypriot dialect has always been a bit like a secret code. Thanks for the tips!

My husband is Cypriot and we live in one of the red soil villages. I’ve been learning Greek (it seems like forever), I still have problems understanding the Cypriot dialogue especially the village ones. I really enjoyed this video and actually have been a subscriber to both channels for some time. I really look forward to more collaborations. Thank you.

Brushed up on (standard) Greek before going on holiday to Cyprus last summer without having any idea that the Cypriot dialect was so different, and in fact didn't discover this until after getting home! Probably because after a few stumbling words of my Greek the locals just reply in English anyway, but I'd also guess that Cypriots must be used to hearing the standard version because of tv, films etc so are comfortable with both forms, like how we British can understand American words even when the converse is not the case.

My mum is from Cyprus from kaleburnu or galebourni, I can hear a lot of pronunciations similar in Turkish Cypriot dialect. We mix Turkish and Greek in my mum's village.

One my favourite videos on your channel so far!! 3 years ago I started living with my very good Greek Cypriot friend in London. I started learning Greek so I could better connect with my friend and I have loved learning this language
I want to learn Cypriot dialect one day as well
If you could do a video on advice for learning Greek Cypriot once you have learnt Greek that would be awesome 😀

Hello, I loved this comparison video between Standard greek and Cypriot. I'm from Calabria (Southern Italy) and was wondering if you knew that there's a greek variant here as well called greko, but also in Apulia (griko). I would like to see in the future a video in which you try having a conversation with speakers from these variants using Standard greek so as to have a comparison. They say that cypriots and cretans have an easier time when talking with us because we share many words.

Se cheretao ce sperego ti, mia imera, sonni na annoristì emmase ce na kami enan video asce emmase ce tus leddhidhiu griku. Metapale, magni dulìa.
