is the variety of Modern Greek that is spoken by the majority of the Cypriot populace and Greek Cypriot diaspora. It is considered a divergent variety as it differs from Standard Modern Greek in various aspects of its lexicon, phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and even pragmatics, not only for historical reasons, but also because of geographical isolation, different settlement patterns, and extensive contact with typologically distinct languages.

Cypriot Greek is not an evolution of ancient Arcadocypriot Greek, but derives from Byzantine Medieval Greek. It has traditionally been placed in the southeastern group of Modern Greek varieties, along with the dialects of the Dodecanese and Chios (with which it shares several phonological phenomena).

Though Cypriot Greek tends to be regarded as a dialect by its speakers, it is unintelligible to speakers of Standard Modern Greek without adequate prior exposure. Greek-speaking Cypriots are diglossic in the vernacular Cypriot Greek (the "low" variety) and Standard Modern Greek (the "high" variety). Cypriot Greek is itself a dialect continuum with an emerging koine. Davy, Ioannou & Panayotou (1996) have argued that diglossia has given way to a "post-diglossic [dialectal] continuum [...] a quasi-continuous spread of overlapping varieties".

I know Greeks from Greece think this dialect sounds funny, but personally I love it so much. It's so unique and simple, but complex in its own way.

2:02 He doesn't say Greeks arm themselves, he says Romioi, which means the ROMANS arm themselves. It is of course reference to the greek old people's of the Eastern Roman Empire. Up until even recent history many greek people's still called themselves Romans (Romioi) including greek cypriots.

Woah. SMG has a Spanish flavour and CG has an Italian flavour. So interesting. Both varieties are beautiful. I'm learning SMG, as there's so many more resources, but it was a trip to Cyprus that captured my heart.

I have some cypriots in my university department, but they don't sound like that. Their accent is more complex, like a hard and faster form of greek. Also one of them told me a real cypriot phrase, and it sounded like a foreign language for me!

Northern Cypriots are talking with old central Anatolian words but with greek toning. Also sentence structure is sometimes like Greek. For example the way you ask questions... You can turn a sentence to question with toning. And there are some sounds which doesn't exist in Turkey like "ΓΓ". Turkish Turks found Turkish Cypriot dialect as melodious and cute. I'm half Turkish half Cypriot and learning Greek. But my teacher is from Thessaloniki. I wish I could learn it in Cypriot Dialect. I would like to know more about history of Cypriot language because even I can hear the effect of colonial period. When I was a kid I thought "busçık" or "bananacık" was something Cypriot : ) (bus/banana) I'm wondering if Greek Cypriots are also using English words mixed with Greek... Also I still couldn't figure out why we (Turkish Cypriots) adding "-cık" or "-çık" (-τζικ/-τσικ) to end of everything... But when I listen this I heard a lot of "-τζι"...
