I am a simple uneducated man who used to install certain pipe lines. I mainly helped dig the trenches and put the dirt back on top. Now I am a surveyor and spend alot of time locating infrastructure like this I usually don't know the name of or function of the design. I appreciate these simple explanations they help me understand a lot more.

If i go back to college, it will probably be to study civil engineering thanks largely to your videos.
Everywhere i go now I am amazed both by the scale of what has been accomplished and the huge room for improvement that remains.

Called ‘snifter’ valves in Scotland! Used in hydraulic heating systems to release air at high points.

For anyone wondering, yes, this is how an air embolism works as well. And yes, it's fixed it pretty much the same way.

Air-Release Vacuum Breaker Valve have used them in the past. There are different versions labeled wise. But I would love your book. Your channel is awesome.. You put a lot of work behind it. KEEP UP THAT CREATIVE!

It's called a "Schnueffelstueck", an automatic overpressure relieve valve, made popular by Roehrich engineering.

I totally guessed and I was correct. This is the highlight of my year.
My life is so depressing.

Great explanation, another reason not just the flow rate through the pipe is turbulent air/water. That can erode at a copper pipe over a long period of time and ends up making a little pin hole that expands pretty quickly once that original hole opens up. As smarter everyday would like, laminar flow is the absolute best thing for plumbing!

Love how you bring attention to things we depend on everyday. As Engineers we only get attention when things go wrong. This could also be a combination air valve allowing for air to enter the main in case of negative pressure wave.

And the bent pipe reduce that pipe breaking from heat/cold expansions and seismic trauma!
