Actually, there's no reason to turn off anything during takeoff or landing, or at any time during flight. Technically, your device does generate a magnetic field, but only a very small, very weak one, and what your told is that this "interferes", what exactly this means depends on who you ask, sometimes it "interferes with communications" as this video states, but this video also has people pointing out how silly that is. The other common excuse is that it interferes with the fly by wire system (electronic signaling to the control surfaces) on the plane, because it induces current in the wires. Both of these are silly for two reasons, first being that the field your device produces is tiny, and both of these problems rely on a changing magnetic field, and the magnetic field produced by even a large laptop isn't changing all that much. Furthermore, interfering with radio communications by accident is really hard, the only time it's likely to happen is if you have a broken microwave, and that's not the sort of thing you run inside of a plane unless you're a flight attendant, and even if you did, the interference bubble would still be too small to be a problem for the communications of the plane. The other issue is silly because fly by wire systems use something called STP (shielded twisted pair in this case, though that is the most ambiguous acronym ever), which is so resistant to induction, you'd be very hard pressed to interfere with it even if you tried. In the end, I'm not even totally sure why these measures are in place, I'm tempted to say it makes people feel safer, except it doesn't, because it makes the plane feel more fragile than it is.

I asked about this once, the chic said the signals wont screw anything up, they just want all the passengers to be free from distractions during the more dangerous parts of the flight i.e take off and landing.
