I used to live in Newark over a decade ago. When you're living there you don't realize how bad it is but you know that it's bad. When you move out and you move far away to a suburb and then you look back at what it is that you moved from you realize just how bad it really is.

Newark NJ was built to be a mini Manhattan. Back in the day Newark had its own Broadway where the shows from NYC Broadway would actually be shown in Newark first to get the response and feedback so they could rework/improve the show for NYC theaters. Penn Station in Newark was built all the way back in 1935 and it was the main hub for the Pennsylvania Railroads train network. Newark was affluent back in the day as well, don't believe me? Stroll through Forest Hill and you will see some of the most beautiful homes in all of NJ. In fact Newark was such a great place to live people of all races, creeds and cultures lived there together peacefully. You had Italian and Irish immigrants along with Jewish and black folks, it was a real melting pot, a great place to live and grow up. Then the race riots happened and forever changed the face of NJ. Every part of NJ that is now 'ghetto' once had wealthy people living there and had beautiful homes/stores/neighborhoods before the riots. Plainfield, East Orange, Orange, Newark, Trenton, Camden...these were all nice towns with affluent areas that had beautiful homes and bustling down towns. So when you see all the beautiful old buildings amongst the boarded up, bombed out places, just know that Newark was once a beautiful and well respected city. I do believe with the right leadership it could be again. Get all these liars, gas lighters and corrupt people out of government in NJ and Newark will prosper again

Newark is rough. There's still some beautiful architecture left over from its golden age in certain areas. A shame

People don't realise that when you're actually there in person it's much worse

I spent most of the mid to late seventies at 835 Broadway a mile or so from the train overhead train track just before Belleville. I have great memories of Newark and really enjoyed my time there. I remember how the Puerto Ricans used to cook on fourth of July all up and down Broadway. Food everywhere 😋

Outside of downtown, Newark has really downgraded in the past few years in my opinion. Roads are horrible, and the littering is out of control at this point.

Dangerous Streets because a lot of punks have guns. This was a beautiful city once, men going to work to support their families. Those are the real tough guys.

Damn, I don't remember Newark being this run down. Im from paterson and moved out of jersey 10 years ago. I used to spend alot of time in Newark, many friends in Irvington too. I swear you get used to being in the hood. Its normal to you. I used to live in 4th ward, and people thought I was crazy for living there, but it was whatever. MIND YOUR BUSINESS, never ever buy borrow anything even a chair from someone in the hood, keep money out of equation and you good.

Such an odd mix in the neighborhoods. Run down, burned out and tagged up houses/buildings, turn the corner and nice lawns, clean houses and new cars. Turn the corner again and trash and goons outside.

Decaying homes, filthy streets, loitering street dudes, vacant lots. Other than that it ain't half bad.
