In Germany you read the book in high school. A real cautionary tale of the horrors of war. True masterpiece by Remarque, written in 1928 & burned by the Nazis in 1933, bc it was the last book they wanted people to read, knowing what’s to come. Thanks Netflix for this film.

I read the book in High School as well for class. I’m American. Really chilling story and what was so captivating about the book was how Bäumer’s character is left in shambles from the experiences of war. There are no moments of bravery, no obstacles overcome or anything else we are accustomed to seeing from a protagonist. It’s just all misery and feelings of dread as Bäumer and his comrades pretty much just sit and wait in the mud for their time to die. It’s really disturbing, but fascinating tale. A lot of books and films glorify war and those involved and really distorts the reality of it. This book is down to earth and realistic about war and it makes me really appreciate it.

I remeber watching the old version with my Dad when i was i kid, and it absolutely blew my mind to the horrors of war.
It didn't glorify or demonise war, it just showed the reality of what war was like.

This trailer seems to portray the remake very much in a similar way, no glorification or demonisation, just the horrific reality and cruelness of warfare.

I look farward to watching this movie with interest.

So glad this movie is spoken in German and subtitled in English. I was cringing at the thought of this movie being English audio before starting the trailer. More authentic and worth reading to hear the actual actors tone and pauses.

I read the book years ago, and I remember it enraptured me so much I read it in four days... upon finishing it, setting it down, I just burst into tears. That book also sparked an interest to learn the stories of the men in the trenches on both sides, and I would embark on several journeys of exploration of the European countryside, looking at old battlefields, cemeteries, fields that were more shell holes than field. It really is sobering.

It's based on the Erich Maria Remarque's book "Im Westen nichts Neues" from 1928. A German writer.
It describes the horrors of World War 1 from the perspective of a young soldier.
One of the most remarkable books I've ever read. I suggest reading it. You won't regret it.

I read this in high school and it's to this day one of my favorite books. It really shows the horrors of war and the cost

I'm fascinated and pleased to see how many others in the comments read this book in high school (me too) and how it fundamentally impacted them even to this day (again, me too)
my one thought going into playing this trailer was "if they haven't gone hard with it, there isn't a point" and it's not for spectacle, but for the book's original purpose - horror. War is horror and waste, war is irrevocable loss.

The original book was the only school required reading that left me wanting for more. It's horrifying and desensitizing yet at the same time enticing and empathetic. A roller-coaster ride experience where the morbid curiosity makes you want to keep on venturing but you are also scared to find out what is beyond.

This is an amazing story. A few people here are saying "this has been done before", like it's an excuse to not celebrate a piece of art and a tragic period from our history. Yes. This. has. been. done. before. But lets us not forget ever that the ambitions of men killed millions and the rest of us are fortunate to live in this time period and have stories as amazing as this one to prevent this horrible history from ever happening again. Thank you to the people who spent their time and energy and love to bring this story back.

Anyone interested in WWI should listen to Dan Carlin's "Blueprint for Armegeddon" series on WWI through the Hardcore History podcast. COMPLETELY changed my views on WWI and how sad (from a human perspective) and pivotal the first world war was as the old world meeting the new. Extremely excited for this film and shedding light on the insane adversity these young kids and men dealt with in such a merciless, grinding war.

I have the personal hand written notebook of my French grandfather who fought and died during this war. He killed germans but was always respectful about them in his letters. He used to call them "poor farmers like me". He was fighting and killing "because we have to" but was not saying any "patriotic" sentences. He was just wanting the war to end.

Looks fantastic, I liked that they aren't shying away from the brutal themes. I just hope it comes to 4k physical disc sometime later as well.

Read the book in school. Watched this last night. Possibly the most harrowing and gritty depiction of war I've ever seen.

We read this in high school back in the 90s as well. Afterward, we were able to watch the (30s) movie because my dad owned a copy. Every year after that, my teacher would have me bring the film in for the other classes to watch as well

Looks like it might be a winner....we shall see. Unfortunately with Netflix you never know what you’re going to get until it’s released but I will say the trailer looks FANTASTIC 💯

One of the strongest novels ever. I have read this book so, so, so many times. It was my companion throughout much of my highschool era depression. You could say I wallowed in my depression, I suppose.

Imo one of the best literature in early 20th century, I really hope they’ll do it justice.
