The Blatant Censorship of All Quiet On The Western Front

War breaks out in Germany in 1914. Paul Bäumer and his classmates quickly enlist in the army to serve their fatherland. No sooner are they drafted than the first images from the battlefield show them the reality of war. But in Germany itself the story would take a very different turn.

The fact our society penalises open conversations about Nazis and Hitler is very worrying. How can we understand evil if we can't call it what it is?

Ive always found calling the nazis "windmill boys" funnier than I probably should

Something else that I found was pretty cool about the 1930 movie was how it was filmed. They brought in actual World War 1 veterans who served on the front lines. The veterans showed the cast how to properly march in formation, wear their uniforms and go over the top of the trench. Several of the background characters were war veterans as well. Hope someone else finds this information interesting as well.

I work in a small bookstore in Germany and we are still selling this book on a regular basis. We always have it here. It's still being read by many.

I hate censorship of history. It's the best recipe for repeating the past

I feel like not enough youtubers call out YT's hypocrisy and censorship

I think Wendigoon had the same censorship problem trying to record his video on it, but that resulted in him passive aggressively eating hummus over scenes of war.

Both my grandfathers fought in WW1. My father's father suffered PTSD (then called shell shock) and ultimately died in a psychiatric hospital.
My mother's father never spoke of his experience and suffered hearing loss and chest infections which I suspect were from the noise of shells and possibly gas attacks. His brother, my great uncle was also profoundly deaf

To me, the most gut-wrenching war movies will always be the ones that show each side as humans

It's awful how YT punishes creators for producing high quality history content. Never give up man❤

It is insane to me that we would block history like this. We are just encouraging this to be forgotten about and then history will repeat itself.

It's kind of stunning to me that we can't talk about the thing that we're never supposed to forget.

It's always sad when history is censored but you did a good job thank you for the video.

If you want both a brutal anti-war book and an extreme story in censorship, consider Vassily Grossman's "Life and Fate." The KGB confiscated the author's spent typewriter type.

Also, as a side note, the judge who sentenced Remarque's sister to death was killed when the courthouse room fell on him after an American bomber hit it

Language is fascinating in the modern world. I appreciate you trying your best to explain this story of doublespeak as honestly as you can within these limits. Well done, its a complicated story to tell.

I've never been affected by a piece of media in such a way, not until I watched this movie; specifically the scene where the main character was fighting the French soldier in the crater. Hearing that French man gurgle and struggle for his life despite knowing it was already over and our protagonist realizing how horrible it was to listen to him slowly pass and trying to help him. It hit me hard.

Never forget.

I read this book by chance in middle school. I was sick and tired of all those stupid teenage resistance books and I wanted something a little more realistic. I asked my dad, an army NCO, for suggestions. This book was the only one he could think of.

Jesus Christ. I cant believe this. I was lucky to watch All Quiet both the 60-70 variant as well as the Netflix. It is a great movie and i beg people to watch both forms and reasearch WW1 if you love history and want to know why the world is the way it is. It was a horrible event in history that turned the world both against itself and against the youth of a generation.

I'm sure this video was incredibly frustrating to get up on youtube but after watching it, 100% worth the effort. Great video and even more importantly, an insanely important topic for people to discuss given how easily the history "All Quiet on the Western Front" is based on could be repeated
