She served as a ship's mascot for the Royal Navy in her younger years.
In the Battle of Britain,
she "showed a keen instinct for survival, even digging [her] own air raid shelter under a set of terrace steps during World War II after feeling the vibrations of bmbs in Exeter."

What troubles me is how temporal the respect is for the those who recently died, let alone those who died last week, a few words if you are lucky, then the world forgets. Remember them, we stand on their shoulders.

If I remember right, the last WWI veterans died about 2004-2006. The veterans of WWII are presently getting very thin on the ground!
