Corpse Flower Plant Pollination

With two Corpse Flower blooms so close together, our curator John took the rare opportunity to collect pollen from one and deliver it to the other. If the pollination is successful, we should see fruits begin to appear by around January 2024! 🤞🌺

I saw the corpse flower blossom in the Indiana University greenhouse several years ago. There was one blooming in another state at that time. I wished the two plant coujd have gotten together.

I saw one of these bloom in NYC! It was really cool but didn’t smell strong at all (apparently when it first opens it’s pretty strong but dissipates relatively soon) - I got there on day 2 or 3 of the bloom and you had to kinda work your position a bit to find a whiff of the flower - smelled like mild spoiled meet from the fridge after the power fails but nothing too crazy. What was even more shocking that I didn’t know was that when these are not blooming they generate a giant palm tree that’s actually a massive leaf in the shape of a tree - so cool!

Beautiful and fascinating flower!
It's like a piece of art from the Victorian, Beaux Arts, and Tiffany lamps!

This clip gives such a great perspective on just how massive the flower is. Now if only we had smell-O-vision to get a whiff of that beauty.

I took my sons to see one at the Atl. Botanical Gardens many yrs ago. The smell wasn't too bad. Didn't cancel out their awe when they stood next to it to take pics. It was taller than they were! 😀

Amazing! I’ve only ever seen photos of them, loved seeing a vid of how beautiful they are. However I’m honestly quite glad it’s just a video and I’m not there in person given how easily I become nauseated lol. Thanks so much for sharing!

My college’s horticulture department had the opportunity to host a corpse flower in its bloom. As an outsider, I love this niche community, because you’d have people traveling from all over to see it during its stinky limited life cycle.
