When the "obnoxious" part of the music starts and a dawn glider sets you on fire at night.

Priceless

Reminds me a lot of Fallout 1 OST, but somewhat creepier

I've heard this song so much. I always use the desert to grind up levels. It's relatively safe. It can give good xp for awhile.
* If my character has the stats for it I always get wayfaring right away. And the salt dunes one too. Then I'd get fasting way if I have the stats and started in Joppa. That way you can travel a lot more without stopping. If you start in the salt dunes, they teach it through the water ritual.
* You can kill the Issachari raiders when you're low level. (That's also a way to make some money as the rifles are worth a little and are super useful up to mid game.)
* Then kill the dawngliders after the raiders don't give any good xp. All you need to do is get the rifle, ammo, and some water. Shoot them as they approach and if you catch fire pour water on yourself. One on one you should be pretty safe at mid levels.
* Another thing in the desert is while you're grinding, you'll be walking around a lot. So you have a very good chance of finding a fungal biome. And as long as you have a rifle and ammo, you can kill all the brooding puffs for over 500xp a pop. It's basically free xp.
* Also you'll be finding traveling merchants. At low levels you can use them to stock up on ammo. And if they're high level they can be useful late game.
There are various other strats I use to increase my odd but my with my play style, I almost never leave the desert until I'm ready to beat the game. I'd guess I've heard this song for at least 2000 hours.

I guess the sci-fi of 20-40 years ago is retro now, but it still feels weird to me as a 2000s boy that the stuff I read growing up is going by the word I used to describe the original Star Wars and Fallout.
