I used GIMP for a while when it first came out. The issue I found was it was a graphic editor created by software developers and that showed in the interface.

Great job JC. Just FYI Affinity just dropped Ver. 1.83 for Photo, Designer, and Publisher. The Team at Affinity Rocks! With everything going on they are writing code from their homes and posting new releases.

Good points, being 76 years old still remember how difficult it was to offend me, aren't we cultivating a generation of pansies?

I’m like you brother, when I hear things of that nature I say to myself “society still on diapers”

Yep. I'm 100% with you on the PC thing.

If something offends (and if you look hard enough, everything can be found offensive) don't use it.

I no longer have Light Room or Photoshop. (long story). I definitely fit into what you described as 80-90 percent of folks who likely don't use a whole lot of photo editing. Therefore, do I need an alternative for Photoshop AND Light room or is just one of them sufficient. By the way, I think the new name of Glimpse is terrific if only to distinguish from Gimp after it is ultimately discontinued as expected. Finally, when they finish with the development of Glimpse and you choose to demo it as you did today, please demo it editing a photo instead of adding words and color backgrounds like slides.

I detest the PC Culture. Nothing good comes from this. Other than that, I love your channel, and look forward to your content

The word glimpse contains gimp within it! True art!

Just had to do a re-build of my workstation & for the first time in years the only Adobe product I have installed is PDF Viewer -YAY! I've been using Capture One for a few years & just love it -Lightroom feels clunky and unprofessional by comparison. Photoshop was replaced by Affinity Photo which I think is even better and far cheaper. Great show!

Nice update about a FREE alternative and where they are planning to go.

Great work, I'll wait a bit and give the new GUI a look. As far as the PC thing, we're eroding our mental toughness, I'm seeing alot of this with our behavior now. We need tough, we need balance but tough needs to be part of that.

Thanks for introducing Glimpse. Your example. however. seemed more like desktop publishing rather than photo editing, which is all I use photoshop for.

My high school teachers had Gimp on all the computers in 2011-2012. None of the students seemed offended by the name. If anything, they just liked having something that wasn't just MS Paint. But I do find that the new brand does look a lot more professional. Which is usually how you get taken seriously when trying to pitch a product in order to cast a wider net. Gimp's logo looked like it was targeting a young demographic with the cartoon mouse with a paintbrush in it's mouth, whereas Glimpse looks very clean with it's logo.

My only concern is that Gimp's front page isn't letting visitors know that they're developing Glimpse. If the plan is to phase out Gimp for Glimpse, I think it would be crucial to let people who use the product know about the new direction the company's going in.

Thanks! Best video lately plus personally very helpful. You convinced me to give this a try. I consider myself open-minded lefty BUT - to be honest I have disregarded GIMP because of name. It just sounded like a complex geeky thing for young hipsters who would intuitively know how to use it out of the box. The second you said the name Glimpse my opinion instantly changed. Keep in mind I started on PageMaker 1.0 so I have probably become bias toward pro software over the years and resistant to learning new stuff. With your quick demo all that vanished. Thanks again!

I honestly never knew where they had gotten the GIMP name was from. I always knew it as the GNU Image Manipulation Program. Having said that, I like the name Glimpse for the app, and the icon is nice too.

I like the idea of changing the overall look of the software. It looked amateurish in my opinion and was probably one of the reasons that I like Krita more.

When I found out about Glimpse, I was genuinely happy about the logo and the name. But when I used it, it was a turn off. I'm a Photoshop user and some of the shortcuts are default on GIMP, weren't default on Glimpse.
For example, ALT+Scroll for zooming in and out in Photoshop and GIMP but in Glimpse, it's Ctrl+Scroll. Why do you want us to manually go change the shortcuts that we've already been used to?

You gotta remember, that the name really has actually been a barrier for wider adoption of the software. Schools, universities etc. have been PC-enough from since at least the 90's to not adopt a software that's called Gimp. I don't think it actually has anything to do with PC-culture, It's more like Gimp is just a bad, "unprofessional" sounding name.
Overall feel of this project is already a lot more professional, but it might need one more rebranding to distance itself from the PC-culture. Gimbal, anyone? :)

I agree with the sentiments but sadly the new GUI is nowhere to be seen 18 months later. Meanwhile, GIMP is also promising big UI changes in the next major release. Even more importantly they are promising proper adjustment layers, now that really will be a game changer! PS. GIMP has been around since 1995, I started using it in 1998...
