Galatians 5:1-5 – For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
Look: I, Paul, say to you that if you accept circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you. I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law. You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace. For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness.
- we are free from the bondage of the law
- rejection of salvation by grace
Galatians 2:18-21
- directed at legalism
- man-made traditions upheld (Galatians 1:13)
- Catholic and Orthodox church upheld by man-made traditions, which is no different to the Judaism Paul is speaking about
- Paul would argue that the Old Testament leads to the belief in grace through faith
Galatians 3:6-29
Few points on Galatians 3:6-29:
(v.6) And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness
- similar to Romans 4:3, quoted from Genesis 15:6
- as a side note, this is also quoted in James 2:23, in reference to faith and works, which cements the idea that James doesn’t contradict Romans and Galatians when it refers to faith and works, but that works are a demonstration of faith. When we look at Romans 4:9-12, we see that Abraham was justified before his circumcision, yet the circumcision was a sign of Gods covenant. What Jews may say is an act of the law (being circumcised), Abraham was justified before he did that. Same way we are justified before we do works (relating back to James 2)
(v.7) only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham
- we are the spiritual seed of Abraham, referring to Romans 4, the law didn’t save Abraham, but his faith did, same way our faith saves us, not our works
(v.8) the Scriptures, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith
- personification of scripture (and a capital for Scripture), to show that the word is God’s word passed down
(v.10) For as many are of the works of the law are under the curse
- Paul then quotes Deuteronomy 27:26, these are enunciated on the plains of Moab by Moses
- total obedience is commanded, yet only Jesus can live up to this standard (2 Corinthians 5:21)
- even in the Old Testament, faith was how to be saved
- Habakkuk 2:4 “the just shall live by faith”
(v.10) Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us
- Christ dying on the cross removes the curse of the law from Deuteronomy
(v.19) What purpose then does the law serve?
- obvious question to be asked
(v.19) It was added because of transgressions
- law given to the Jews because of their sinfulness, and to show their sinfulness and their need for God
