0:10 Outstanding performance by Sebastian Berner. Clear. Powerful. Ample. Impetuous. Best rendition I've heard of Mahler's 5th on the trumpet. Bravo.

These hr-symphonie recordings always shed new light on pieces I thought I knew. And what a blessing that these treasures are still freely available without advertisement! Thank you so much for this!!! ❤

Gustav Mahler used to travel to the mountains every summer, where he had a house with a small hut in the garden where he worked. He didn't like to be disturbed when he was working, and the rule was that if the door was open, you could go and talk to him, but under no circumstances should you interrupt him if the door was closed! He wrote nine symphonies and they are all long pieces of music in several movements. Mahler thought that a symphony should be like the world, that it should contain all kinds of musical emotions. His music, which is sometimes joyful, sad, anxiety-provoking, dramatic, sublime, funny, mean : it’s all there! This melody contains all types of emotion. It begins with a funeral march including dramatic music with waltzes and a massive, triumphant ending. The fourth movement « Adagietto - Sehr langsam » is probably the most beloved by music lovers. The Adagietto is the shortest movement, lasting about 10 minutes, and it does not use the full orchestra : it is just scored for strings and harp without the presence of woodwinds, brass or percussion. The piece is written to represent his love for his future wife, Alma, and the work is full of fiery beauty. It is lyrical and slow with emotional and passionate outbursts. This is the apogee of Mahlerian writing if not that of the symphony. Imagine a work of such magnitude that it actually reflects the entire world. Happiness is like a dream ! *Lucien*

One of the best classical pieces ever made. The trumpet entrance is amazing—one of the most iconic ever. The bold and brilliant brass lines are what made Gustav Mahler’s works so special. What a flawless symphony!

Massive kudos to the camera work and editing. Really helps highlight and underscore the musical ideas, particular in the polyphonic finale!

Wow. Once again, this orchestra and conductor literally lifted me from my seat in my home cinema. An incredible performance - certainly the best I have heard of this work (an opinion that's becoming a habit with this, one of the world's best orchestras under a conductor born to direct them). But I want to concentrate on the technology that brings to us such stunning performances. Right from the start, with new fonts in the orchestras' logos, is it just me, or have there been new cameras recently, or some change in the video technology? Watching in darkness on a 2.2m screen, recorded at 1080p and bit rates approaching 5k, and comparing with relatively recent uploads at the same specs, the images seem better defined, with better and more consistent colour across the screen (particularly in skin tones). Add to that, the masterly video direction tightly following the score (and at the same time, capturing some compelling cameos of the players), resulted in a you-are-there experience.
Then this is presented with some of the best sound engineering I've ever heard. It's not simply "sound quality". It's the total balance of the orchestra, the natural acoustic, the absolute realism. From capturing the most delicate sounds from the harp at the start of the exquisite slow movement, and the delicacy of the strings as they slowly unfold, to the strident blasts from the wonderful playing of the first desk French horn, and the power of a large orchestra at fff. The brilliance of the video, it's direction and the fabulous audio, all culminating in bringing the brilliance of Mahler's playful polyphony in the joyous final movement.
These are the factors that make watching at home almost better than being there. But one flaw. Why was the audience response curtailed, faded off after the hastily inserted credits were rolled? Part of the "being there" experience is the applause, which hr usually includes. That brought my enjoyment to an abrupt halt, like a slap in the face. This also occurred with another recent stunning performance, the Rach 3 with Malofeev. Also, unusually, some of the vision was a little dark - but it was still the best Rach 3 ever.

I have heard it during the proms last summer and I wasn't totally sold on it, but hearing a version by this wonderful orchestra I really enjoyed it, there's so much magic, beauty and wonder in this interpretation <3

Wow! Wonderful performance of a rather bold interpretation. I heard Bernstein’s Mahler 5 decades ago, and this ranks right up there with that concert.

When I was young I saw Viscontis film "Death in Venice", where this Adagietto by Mahler is a music theme in the film. That was my awakening about Mahlers music, and since then I have always loved his 5:th symphony. I find Alain Altinoglus version together with hr-Sinfonieorchester wonderful, and I believe it is one of the best interpretations I ever heard, if not the best? Thank you all.
