According to clinician-scientist Dr Cosnet Lerato Rametse, HIV transmission research on the male genitalia is lacking, although the disease remains a prevalent health burden globally. In her Young Scientist Presentation, she shared her findings on how male medical circumcision at birth and the presence of asymptomatic sexually transmitted infections could affect the skin barrier function of the different anatomical parts of a penis that are the most vulnerable to HIV infection. She hopes her research will give rise to alternative non-invasive treatment for HIV infection.
