Will We Ever Be Able to Colonize the Moon?

Revelations about the moon’s past is giving some scientists reason to believe it might make a better future home than we thought.

Read More:
Lunar volcanism produced a transient atmosphere around the ancient Moon
“Studies of the lunar atmosphere have shown it to be a stable, low-density surface boundary exosphere for the last 3 billion years. However, substantial volcanic activity on the Moon prior to 3 Ga may have released sufficient volatiles to form a transient, more prominent atmosphere.”

An Atmosphere Around the Moon? NASA Research Suggests Significant Atmosphere in Lunar Past and Possible Source of Lunar Water
“The ancient lunar atmosphere was thicker than the atmosphere of Mars today and was likely capable of weathering rocks and producing windstorms. Perhaps most importantly, it could be a source for some, if not all, of the water detected on the Moon.”

Is it better to live on the moon or on Mars? A scientific investigation
“If humans needed to beat a retreat from planet Earth, would it be better to live on Mars, or on the moon?”

'Late Heavy Bombardment LBH'. Shouldn't it be LHB?

No to mention is the best option we have for putting up some heavy industry thats not earth bound.
The moon has plenty of material and the low gravity makes it ideal for constructing spacecrafts and other materiel for space exploration and exploitation.
Plus its close enough that a trip back is trivial in comparison to Mars. Or for emergency aid if things go wrong.

Yeah, can we go there now please?
Easier to build and refuel on the moon, in a way, its “expensive” to ship from Earth

Shouldn't we colonize moon first / utilise it in some way to colonize other planets like Mars.

We recently found a ton of water on the moon. So even if we dont colonize it for some reason we still have a stellar gas station for future spacecraft.

0:55 Why is Venus smaller than Mars? Its almost as big as Earth.

We should turn the moon into a death star in the future

I think the moon is our stepping stone out into space. If we could perfect the moon we could do a lot more with planets who have thicker atmospheres. The travel time alone makes up for a lot of it. Especially in a emergency situation

I think it's possible to colonize the Moon. Instead of building base camps on the surface, tunnel under the surface and create large chambers for living and manufacturing. Also, the Moon could be used as a jumping off base for spacecraft going to Mars or other planets.

2:30 that poor spaceship crashed into mars :( RIP

It simply makes much more sense colonise the moon to the extent of at least being capable of reliable resource production and space vehicle launches before this rush to Mars.

Building a lunar base first is simply the most rational first step for extra-terrestrial colonization. A few day trip is much more viable than a much longer and more dangerous trip that could last years i.e render the crew so weakened they'll struggle to survive under any significant gravity.

Launching Mars Missions from the moon simply makes much more physical sense from energy efficiency, with it's much lower gravity and lack of appreciable atmosphere making both launches and landings so much easier for spacecraft, especially if the fuel and spacecraft was predominantly produced on the moon.

Sadly, we are now stuck in an age of peacocking, anti-logic and anti-reason.

I love the animation. Seeing more of this style would improve the viewing experience on YouTube. Bravo to the artist.

India's CHANDRAYAAN -1 mission already found water on moon back in 2009 .

I generally like your videos but this one left the question sort of unanswered. You mentioned there might be water trapped at the poles but no mention if it would be possible to artificially recreate the atmosphere. Surely even if it took thousands of years for a protective atmosphere it would still be better than Mars where human beings would probably have to live underground to survive there. The moon is also much closer.

Can you make a video about artificial blue light, sleep, and how we might evolve (or not) to fight this problem?

Would love a video about the proposed “gateway” and our current progress on space manufacturing!

My cousin told me she joined a "Moon Colony." Yeah, turns out it was a nudist colony, but she was right about the moons.

Mars has the same problem with radiation bombardment. And while Mars is a culturally fascinating feature of human imagination and ambition, it is incredibly far away. I think the moon provides a fine stepping stone to the outer solar system. I think the term lagrange point should enter our vocabulary more often than it does, as this and nearness of the moon are and have always been our next step. Mars is too much like those people who are obsessed with climbing mountains and lose their lives at too early an age because they were driven by self-unchecked ambition. Our drive to explore must always be checked by logic. There is much that can be accomplished on moon with the goal of launching satellites and human exploration from the lunar surface.

We have to built up indudtrial zone moon. It's necessary.

If the problems with colonizing the moon are meteors and radiation from a weak atmosphere, then couldn’t we build underground on the moon?
