Solving the Trolley Problem

Lego and Lionel demonstrate that nobody has to get hit by a trolley.

Filmed with a Sony NEX-VG30 camcorder at 60 fps. Special thanks to the ten Lego minifigures who volunteered to be crash test dummies.

The trolley problem asks the philosophical question of whether it would be better to send a locomotive crashing into one person instead of several. I wanted to point out that there are actually more than two possible outcomes depending on when the switch is pulled. If the lever is flipped while the middle of the train car is passing over the points, it is possible to send the bogeys onto both tracks, resulting in the worst possible damage. If the switch is pulled while the wheels of the car are traversing over the points, it is possible to derail one of the bogeys, bringing the trolley to a stop without it crashing or running into anyone.

Simple solution: just stop the switch midway through so the trolley derails. Rough stop for the people on the trolley, but survivable

Simple, put everyone on one track and divert the train to the other.

In conclusion, if you try to divert the trolley to the one guy, you will hurt everyone on the trolley, possibly derail the trolley, and still kill the other 4 people, and now you are liable for murder.
The trolley problem got worse.
