I once replaced 2 Farad capacitors at a very old power plant. Being an instrument tech, I heard capacitors and my mind went to the little guys I’m used to soldering onto circuit boards to make ac to dc power converters, not the 50 pound monsters I encountered

The best part of your channel is watching you ever so slowly turn more feral

Femto farad is about where you start measuring stuff you don't want acting like a capacitor.

I like the safety wire installed, he knows what could happen if the sucker got just a little bit charged.

"that thing needs a girth certificate" is _exactly_ what she said.

Yeah capacitors are scary. I’ve built a couple scary capacitor banks in my time just for the heck of it. I think the scariest thing about high voltage capacitors is if they aren’t left shorted out they will pick up charged particles in the air and slowly charge with that and with a high voltage cap that built up charge can be more than enough to be lethal. Not to mention that due to capacitors low ESR they can release a buttload of energy in less than a second.

One night when his charge was at full capacity, Micro Farad decided to get a cute little coil to discharge him. He picked up Millie Amp and took her for a ride on his megacycle. They rode across the wheat stone bridge, and into the magnetic field next to the flowing current.
Micro Farad, attracted by Millie's characteristic curve, soon had her field fully excited. He laid her on the ground potential, raised her frequency, lowered her resistance, and pulled out his high voltage probe. He inserted it in parallel and began to short circuit her shunt. Fully excited, Millie cried out, "ohm, ohm, give me mho".

I remember waaay back in high school physics having examples of capacitance calculations in a text book... the drawings that went with them showed typical electrolytic caps but the answers were mostly in the range of 10 to100 Farads. Our teacher when realising burst out laughing before explaining how the ludicrous values would require caps that were the size of a van.

Small correction: whoever named million should be kicked in the d. Milli is derived from the latin word Mille, which means one thousand. Hence the M in MMXXIV for 2024. Kilo is derived from the old Greek word for 1000: Chilloi

I remember having one of these on my car in the early 2000's. I disassembled and sold my stereo and the starter immediately started going slower. The capacitor really helped giving the starter the extra ompf when the battery was on it's last leg.

I love capacitors but I love that t-shirt more

Chris, you’d never remember me but we met in 2008 at The Geek Group and I’ve followed you through The Geek Group, The NSF, and here ever since. I’ve always loved your equipment autopsies, your approachable breakdowns of complex subjects (especially electrical theory) and your hilariously irreverent shop humor. Your appreciation and explanation of engineering is uniquely enjoyable. It’s so great to see you back in the saddle of content creation, and every time I’m scrolling YT shorts and I hear “Wanna see something cool?” It makes me happy. I can’t wait for more long form content too. I took my kids to see a hydro plant in Midland the other day and explained how it works because I loved your Authorized Personnel Only series so much. Keep up the great work man, it’s top notch!

This character development is chaotic, and I am absolutely here for it ☠️😎😭🤣

I'm old enough to remember when really small capacitors where sized in "micro micro farads". I think it was in college when they started using the prefix "pico". About the same time that Hertz (Hz) was adopted for the unit of frequency instead of "cycles per second".

Thanks for showing this. I had no idea that a Farad capacitor actually existed. I thought the highest we had were a few hundred mili farads

Why the jumper cable across the leads? To ensure a stray charge doesn't stop your heart ☠︎

Be sure to check those retail audio caps because most of them are fake. Alot just have a bunch of electrolytics on a pcb inside a metal tube.

We need 1000v 1TerraFarad graphene capacitors for the Ev market🎉

I love the "just what will he say next" angle your videos are taking on while still being educational.
