elementaryOS 5.0 Overview | Distro Delves S1:Ep3

Показать описание
In this episode of Distro Delves, we're scoping out elementaryOS and comparing it against our baseline distro to see how it compares to it and other distros in the series.

elementaryOS is a desktop-oriented Linux distribution developed by the elementaryOS team and various Open Source contributors. It is based on Ubuntu LTS but uses a completely different desktop environment.

elementaryOS 5.1 is right around the corner but worry not - I'll be reviewing 5.1 sometime in 2020

ppa support is super easy to enable. It's literally ONE command:

sudo apt install software-properties-common

And like that you're running free in the world of third-party-repos, boom.

I use Elementary and it's perfect for me.
But it has one massive drawback - dist-upgrade isn't supported so if there's a new release you have to do a fresh install. Which, seeing as it's aimed at new users, is madness.
I managed to upgrade from the last version but it's not something a new user could do without messing up massively.
As for speed and usability, it's superb.
Like XFCE though, you can't store anything on the Desktop. It's purely decorative. Again, not ideal for new users or especially users coming from Windows.

Do a review of Solus, best distro there is hands down!

Before trying it, I thought highly of elementary OS. But it was just such a mess after installation. It had massive boot problems and overall just felt unusable. Multiple screens were just a pain to configure. I switched back to manjaro as soon as possible.

Furthermore I think this "closed in" approach is not really good for new users. It's even more closed than Ubuntu in regards of what software you can run and the distro update is just a joke for new users. Ultimately I must say, that I don't get why this distro is so popular for new users. It looks really pretty and has some nice features and feels kinda minimalistic (like MacOS), but is just strangely preconfigured, that I wouldn't recommend it to any Linux newbie

Dear Egee! Do you use it as a daily driver? How do you deal with the top panel icons for apps like Discord or other apps that use ayatana indicators?

I feel like I need to try out these benchmark tools because in most games I play I am getting 80-110 fps. So either the hardware being used is bad for games, or the games I am running aren't that intense... still I don't scale them down performance wise in most cases.

Elementary is ok, they just lock it down too much for my liking..

Have to go through hoops to get 3rd party ppa's...

If all you do is surf the web and do emails then elementary is just "ok"

Do a video on how to recreate KDE setups 😃

I use Arch btw (well... Manjaro). I've always been interested in elementary but I'm happy with my current setup. This is a pretty interesting series and I like that you compare performance which similar series that I've seen don't.
